Northern State 57 Wayne State 41
Northern State used a big second half to rally from a 28-22 halftime deficit as the Wolves topped Wayne State College 57-41 in Northern Sun Conference men's basketball played Friday evening at the Barnett Center in Aberdeen, South Dakota. The host Wolves move to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in league play while WSC falls to 1-6 and 0-3.
Northern State, entering the game ranked second in the NSIC in scoring at 84.5 points per game, jumped out to an early 10-0 lead in the first four minutes of the game. But WSC came storming back and went on a 16-0 run and took a 16-10 lead on a Vontrell Seroyer three pointer with 9:14 left in the first half. The Wildcats maintained their lead and took an eight point advantage at 28-20 with 1:46 to go before halftime on a Seroyer layup as WSC took a 28-22 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Wolves opened the second half with a 10-0 run and held WSC without a point for the first 7:02 of the second half to regain the lead at 32-28. A Seroyer three pointer cut the Northern State lead to one at 32-31, but Northern State took control of the game with another scoring spurt (14-3) to go in front 46-34 with 7:32 to go in the game. Another Seroyer trey pulled WSC within nine at 46-37, but Northern State pushed the lead back into double digits and went on to the 57-41win over the Wildcats.
Senior reserve guard Vontrell Seroyer scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Wildcats followed by Darren Moore with a season-high six points off the bench. WSC shot 34.9 percent from the field, making 15 of 43 shots. The 'Cats were 6 of 16 behind the three point line and 5 of 8 at the charity stripe.
Dustin Tetzlaff led Northern State with 18 points followed by Alex Thomas with 13. The Wolves made 17 of 34 field goals for 50 percent, including 4 of 8 behind the three point line. NSU was 19 of 22 at the free throw line.
Northern State held a slim 25-23 advantage in rebounds over Wayne State as Collin Pryor grabbed a game-high eight boards for the Wolves while Darren Moore hauled in six caroms to lead Wayne State. The Wildcats had 16 turnovers to 13 on Northern State.
Wayne State will conclude its Northern Sun Conference road trip Saturday with a 6:00 p.m. game at the University of Mary in Bismarck, North Dakota.
