SCSU men pull away in second half for 64-47 win over Wildcats

            St. Cloud
State held Wayne State to a season-low 28 percent shooting as the Huskies pulled away in the second half for a 64-47 Northern Sun Conference men's basketball win over the Wildcats Tuesday evening at Halenbeck Hall in St. Cloud, Minnesota.  The host Huskies move to 10-1 overall and 6-1 in league play while Wayne State drops to 4-8 and 3-5 in the NSIC.

            Wayne State's Darren Moore opened the scoring in the game for the Wildcats, but it was the only lead for the Wildcats during the contest.  SCSU went on a 16-4 run and took a 16-6 lead with 9:06 to play in the first half on a Connor Niehaus layup.  The Huskies took their biggest lead of the first half at 12 points, 28-16, before Wayne State's Vontrell Seroyer scored the final five points of the half on a three pointer and layup to cut the St. Cloud State advantage to 28-21 at halftime.

            The Huskies built a 14 point lead early in the second half at 38-24.  But WSC made a run at St. Cloud State, cutting the lead to seven points at 41-34 with 9:01 to play on a pair of Derrell Williams free throws.  But St. Cloud State put the game out of reach by scoring the next nine points over a span of 2:06, going up 50-34 with 6:55 to play.  WSC could get no closer than 13 points the rest of the night as St. Cloud State went on to the 64-47 win.

            Senior guard Vontrell Seroyer scored 13 points to lead Wayne State in scoring followed by junior forward Derrell Williams with 12 points.  The Wildcats shot a season-low 28.8 percent from the field making 15 of 52 shots.  WSC was 4 of 14 behind the three point line and 13 for 20 (65 percent) at the charity stripe.

            St. Cloud State's top scorer was sophomore center Tim Bergstraser with 17 points with freshman forward Connor Niehaus adding 11.  The Huskies made 18 of 45 shots from the field for 40 percent and made just 1 of 8 from the three point line.  SCSU had a sizeable advantage at the free throw line, dropping 27 of 34 attempts for 79.4 percent.

            St. Cloud State edged Wayne State in rebounding 36-34 as Williams hauled in seven boards to lead the Wildcats while Bergstraser grabbed a game-high eight rebounds for the Huskies.  WSC had 16 turnovers compared to 11 on SCSU.

            Wayne State will be at home this weekend for a pair of Northern Sun Conference contests, hosting Minnesota Duluth Saturday and Bemidji State Sunday in games starting at 4:00 p.m. each day.
