Cori Hobbs registered her 10
th double-double of the season Friday evening with 16 kills and 18 digs to lead #18 Wayne State College in a 25-21, 25-18, 23-25 and 25-20 Northern Sun Conference volleyball win over Northern State in Aberdeen, South Dakota. The Wildcats move to 17-6 overall and 9-4 in the NSIC while the host Wolves fall to 12-9 and 7-6 in league play.
The Wildcats got off to a slow start, trailing 10-4 in the first set. Still trailing 14-12, the 'Cats scored six straight points to take control of the first set for a 25-21 win. The second set was close with WSC up 16-14, but the Wildcats scored four straight points highlighted by back-to-back kills from
Melanie Placke to take a 25-18 second set win. Northern State rallied from a 22-19 deficit in the third set to pick up a 25-23 win, but WSC came back strong in the fourth set and built an early 15-10 lead and went on to a 25-20 win to finish off the Wolves in four sets.
Wayne State outhit Northern State in the match .187 to .128 as WSC had 54 kills to 52 for the Wolves. The Wildcats forced NSU into 29 attack errors along with nine service errors and had one more block than Northern State 7-6.
Hobbs led WSC with her 16 kill, 18 dig performance while senior rightside hitter
Melanie Placke added 13 kills with a .400 attack percentage. Freshman
Katie Hughes accounted for a team-high 25 digs while redshirt freshman libero
Courtney VanGroningen added 18. Redshirt freshman setter
Leisa McClintock handed out 41 set assists and had 11 digs while junior middle blocker
Lexi Malm had a team-high four blocks.
The Wildcats will conclude their NSIC road trip Saturday afternoon with a 4 p.m. contest at MSU Moorhead.
