Alex Armes had 11 kills while hitting .667 to go with a team-high four blocks to lead #18 Wayne State College in a 3-0 Northern Sun Conference volleyball sweep over #14 Minnesota State Saturday afternoon at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. Scores of the match were 25-22, 25-20 and 25-13. WSC is now 19-7 on the season and 11-5 in the NSIC while Minnesota State falls to 16-8 and 10-6 in league play.
The visiting Mavericks jumped out to a 9-5 lead in the first set, but WSC came back to tie the score at 12-12. The 'Cats took their first lead of the set at 15-14 on a
Katie Hughes kill and never trailed again in going on to the 25-22 first set win. The 'Cats got off to a slow start in the second set trailing 6-1. With WSC still trailing 10-6 in the set, the Wildcats took control by scoring 12 straight points including 11 in a row off the serve of Hughes as WSC took an 18-10 lead and went on to the 25-20 second set win.
The third set was controlled by WSC as the Wildcats jumped out to a 12-3 lead forcing MSU to take a timeout and the 'Cats cruised to a 25-13 third set win by recording 15 kills and just two attack errors in the final set while forcing MSU into seven attack errors.
WSC outhit Minnesota State .281-.095 as the Wildcats forced the Mavericks into 20 attack errors. The 'Cats held a 47-32 edge in kills and 42-32 in digs while the Mavericks had nine blocks to seven for the Wildcats.
Armes paced Wayne State with her 11 kills and no errors for a .667 attack percentage along with a team-high four blocks.
Cori Hobbs followed with nine kills and nine digs while redshirt freshman setter
Leisa McClintock added eight kills with eight digs and 30 set assists. Hughes led WSC with 22 digs followed by Hobbs,
Courtney VanGroningen and
Tatum Wroblewski with nine each.
Wayne State will play their final home game of the season Thursday evening (November 1) hosting #1 Southwest Minnesota State in a 7 p.m. Northern Sun Conference matchup.
