Southwest Minnesota State used 59 percent shooting (29 of 49) to pull away in the second half for a 73-58 Northern Sun Conference men's basketball win over Wayne State College Friday evening in Marshall, Minnesota. The host Mustangs move to 11-9 overall and 10-6 in the NSIC with Wayne State now owning records of 5-15 on the season and 4-12 in league play.
The host Mustangs jumped out to an early 12-4 lead on the Wildcats with 11:47 to play in the half. With Southwest Minnesota State leading 19-13, Wayne State scored the next eight points and took their first lead of the night at 21-19 on a Adol Aluong lay-in with 4:33 to play in the half. With the score tied at 25-25, SMSU closed the final 2:13 of the first half scoring seven of the final nine points in the half to take a 32-27 lead over the Wildcats at halftime.
SMSU slowly pulled away in the second half to finish off the Wildcats. The Mustangs took their first double digit lead at 43-33 with 16:42 remaining. WSC got as close as seven points at 43-36 on a pair of Amry Shelby free throws with 16:25 left to play. SMSU then went on an 11-2 run over the next 4:14 and took a 16 point lead at 54-38 on a Jordan Miller three pointer with 12:11 to go and the Mustangs maintained their double digit lead to defeat the Wildcats 73-58.
Junior guard Amry Shelby led three Wildcat players in double figures with 13 points followed by Vontrell Seroyer and Derrell Williams with 12 points apiece. Wayne State shot 41.1 percent from the field making 23 of 56 shots. The 'Cats were 4 of 14 from the three point line and 8 of 11 at the charity stripe.
SMSU had five players reach double figures as sophomore center Nick Smith accounted for 14 points. William Giddings and Jordan Miller poured in 13 points each with Vinard Birch and Casey Sussenguth accounting for 11 apiece. The Mustangs made 29 of 49 shots from the field for 59.2 percent, making 7 of 12 three pointers to go with 8 of 11 at the free throw stripe.
Southwest Minnesota State held a 33-23 advantage in rebounding over the Wildcats thanks to six rebounds by Sussenguth while Derrell Williams hauled in six rebounds to lead WSC on the glass. The Mustangs had 18 turnovers to just 13 by the Wildcats.
Wayne State will be on the road again Saturday visiting Minnesota State in Mankato for a 6:00 p.m. Northern Sun Conference contest.
