SCSU pitching shuts down Wildcat bats in NSIC baseball sweep

            #4 St. Cloud State used strong pitching to sweep Wayne State 5-2 and 10-0 in eight innings in Northern Sun Conference baseball played Saturday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne.  The visiting Huskies are now 20-5 overall and 5-1 in league play while Wayne State falls to 12-8 and 3-3 in the NSIC.
            The first game saw the visiting Huskies snap a 2-2 tie with two runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh to down the Wildcats 5-2.  SCSU took a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and third innings.  But WSC came back and tied the score at 2-2 with a pair of runs in the fourth inning.  Mike Bisenius and Travis Parsons led off the inning with walks.  A C.J. Nolen single to right-center field scored Bisenius while a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Justin Beranek scored Parsons to even the score at 2-2.
            SCSU regained the lead with two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh for a 5-2 lead.  WSC mounted a rally in the seventh, loading the bases, before falling to the Huskies.  Braulio Acosta reached on a Husky error followed by a Parsons single and a Ritzdorf bunt single to load the bases with two outs, but SCSU brought in reliever Scott Lieser and he got Nolen to fly out to left field to end the game as the Huskies held on for the 5-2 win.
            St. Cloud State had eight hits in the first game to six for the Wildcats.  All six WSC hits were singles by Pat Burkhart, Parsons, Ritzdorf, Nolen, Michael Herman and Brett Keim.  
            Senior starter Austen Wisroth (3-1) suffered his first pitching loss of the season, allowing four runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings with two strikeouts and four walks.  Jerad Barth worked the final 1 2/3 innings and gave up one run on one hit with two strikeouts and no walks.  
            The second game saw St. Cloud State starter Shawn Riesgraf and reliever Logan Birr combine on a three-hit shutout while striking out 12 Wildcat batters as the Huskies posted a 10-0 win in eight innings over Wayne State to complete the sweep.
            The game was scoreless until the fourth inning when SCSU scored one run.  The Huskies added four runs in the fifth for a 5-0 lead and then put the game out of reach with a five-run eighth inning for the 10-0 win.
            Burkhart, Acosta and Beranek each singled for Wayne State's lone hits in the second game as SCSU outhit the Wildcats 14-3.
            Junior starter Tadd Johansen (3-1) was tagged with the pitching loss, charged with five runs on 10 hits over four innings of work.  He struck out two and walked one.  Nick Ragan and Eric Schwieger each worked one scoreless inning of relief while Matt Schulz pitched 1 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on three hits with one walk.  Tyler Hohenstein worked the final 2/3 inning, allowing one hit and one run with two walks.  
             Wayne State will conclude its four-game series with St. Cloud State Sunday in a doubleheader starting at noon at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne.
