Strong pitching carries WSC in sweep at Northern State

            Tom Doran fired five innings of one-hit ball in the opener while Jerad Barth pitched five innings of one hit relief in two games to lead Wayne State in a 5-2 and 5-4 sweep at Northern State in Northern Sun Conference baseball played Saturday afternoon at Fossum Field in Aberdeen, South Dakota.  With the two wins, the Wildcats are now 20-12 on the season and 11-7 in the NSIC while the host Wolves drop to 12-19 and 5-11 in league play.

            In the opener, junior starter Tom Doran allowed just one hit over five innings and Travis Parsons doubled twice with three runs batted in to give the Wildcats a 5-2 win.  The 'Cats opened the scoring in the third when Braulio Acosta singled and Justin Beranek walked with both players scoring on a Parsons double to right center for a 2-0 lead. 

            WSC put three runs on the board in the fifth inning thanks to a RBI double by Parsons scoring Mike Bisenius.  Jake Ritzdorf reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on a passed ball with the other run coming on a Brett Keim RBI single that scored C.J. Nolen, who reached base on a walk.  Northern State put two runs on the board in the sixth inning off WSC reliever Trevor Reeves to make the score 5-2 in the sixth, but Wildcat reliever Jerad Barth came in and shut down the Wolves to seal the 5-2 win.

            The Wildcats had seven hits in the game as Parsons was 2 for 3 with a pair of doubles and three RBI's.  Keim finished 2 for 2 with an RBI while Acosta was 2 for 4.  Michael Herman had the other Wildcat hit.  Doran (3-1) earned the win on the mound with five strong innings, allowing just one hit with one walk and one strikeout.

            The second game saw Parsons and C.J. Nolen each hit home runs while Brett Keim was 2 for 3 with the game-winning RBI as the Wildcats completed the sweep with a 5-4 win.

            Northern State scored single runs in the second and third innings for a 2-0 lead, but WSC answered with solo runs in the third and fourth to tie the score at 2-2.  Jake Ritzdorf had an RBI single in the fourth while Mike Bisenius had an RBI single in the fifth to score Keim, who doubled earlier.  The 'Cats took a 4-2 lead in the sixth thanks to solo homers by Parsons and Nolen, but Northern State knotted the score at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth with two runs.

            In the eighth inning, Parsons was hit by the pitch to lead off the inning followed by walks to Nolen and Michael Frericks to load the bases.  Keim then produced a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Parsons for the eventual game-winning run in a 5-4 contest.

            Northern State outhit WSC in the second game 12-7.  Keim was 2 for 3 with a double, RBI and run scored.  Parsons and Nolen each hit solo homers while Bisenius, Ritzdorf and Cris Ely added singles.

            Starter Eric Schwieger had a no-decision in 5 2/3 innings of work, striking out eight batters while allowing four runs on nine hits.  Taylor MacDonell worked one-third of an inning and was charged with two hits and one walk, but Barth came in again and shut down the Wolves to earn the win working the final three innings of relief, giving up just one hit with two strikeouts.

            Wayne State will conclude the four-game NSIC series at Northern State Sunday afternoon in a doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m.
