Game 1 - #11 Minnesota State 8 Wayne State 1

Game 2 - Wayne State 3 #11 Minnesota State 1

Junior right hander Michael Frericks fired a complete game five hitter with nine strikeouts to carry Wayne State in a 3-1 win over #11 Minnesota State Sunday afternoon to salvage the final game of a four-game NSIC baseball series that concluded at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne.  Minnesota State won the opener 8-1 and is now 29-8 and 18-4 in the NSIC while Wayne State sports records of 25-13 and 17-7 in league play following Sunday's split.
The first game saw Minnesota State hold the Wildcats to just four hits as the Mavericks cruised to an 8-1 win.  MSU scored two runs in the second, three in the third and fifth innings while WSC avoided a shutout in the sixth inning with a single run.  Blake Brisson reached on a fielding error and advanced to third on Kevin Andersen's single before scoring on a wild pitch to avoid the shutout loss.
MSU had 10 hits in the first game to Wayne State's four.  Andersen finished 2 for 3 at the plate while Brandon Lalk and Curtis Bussard each added singles.
Senior left hander Eric Schwieger (2-3) was tagged with the pitching loss, allowing eight runs (five earned) on nine hits with three strikeouts and one walk.  Bussard worked the final inning in relief and had one strikeout while allowing one hit.
The second game saw Frericks win his fifth straight start with an impressive complete-game effort to carry the Wildcats in a 3-1 win as Wayne State avoided the four game sweep to the Mavericks.
Frericks, a junior from St. Cloud, Minnesota (Apollo HS), struck out nine batters and allowed just one run on five hits to shut down the Maverick offense.
WSC scored single runs in the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead.  In the first, Curtis Bussard led off with a single and scored on CJ Nolen's single to right field for a 1-0 lead.  In the second, Justin Beranek singled and scored on Brett Keim's double down the left field line for a 2-0 Wildcat advantage.
After Minnesota State scored in the top of the sixth to trim the WSC lead to 2-1, the 'Cats countered with a run in the bottom of the inning as Kevin Andersen belted a solo homer to left field to round out the scoring giving WSC the 3-1 win.
Wayne State had eight hits in the second game to MSU's five.  Keim was 2 for 3 with a double and RBI while Nolen was also 2 for 3 with a pair of singles and RBI for the Wildcats.  Justin Beranek added two singles while Andersen had a solo homer for WSC at the plate.
Wayne State will be in action again Wednesday afternoon hosting Upper Iowa in a Northern Sun Conference doubleheader set to begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex.
