Bemidji State built a 42-25 halftime lead thanks to 63 percent shooting (14 of 22) as the Beavers were too much for Wayne State in a 69-46 Northern Sun Conference men's basketball victory Saturday evening over the Wildcats at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. The Beavers are now 10-4 overall and 7-3 in the NSIC while Wayne State slips to 7-7 and 4-6 in league play.
The visiting Beavers raced out to an early 13-2 lead and never gave the Wildcats a chance to get back into the game. WSC got as close as 13-7 followed a 3-pointer by
Ryan Rolfzen with 14:25 to go in the first half. Bemidji State then used back-to-back 3's from Brock Lutes to take a 19-7 lead and the Beavers led by double figures the rest of the game.
WSC was down 35-25 with 1:46 to go in the half following a layup by
Joel Heesch, but the Beavers closed the half with the final seven points for a 42-25 halftime lead thanks to stellar field goal shooting, making 14 of 22 shots for 63.6 percent in the opening 20 minutes.
The Beavers continued their hot shooting for a majority of the second half until the reserves closed out the game as Wayne State never got closer than 14 points in the second half.
Senior guard
Adol Aluong led Wayne State in scoring with 13 points while freshman guard
Damjan Sredanovic added a career-high 12 points on 4 of 6 shooting from the field.
The Wildcats made just 18 of 54 shots for 33.3 percent, going 5 of 20 from the 3-point line and 5 of 7 at the charity stripe.
Bemidji State was led by junior guard Brock Lutes with 25 points. Jake Schalow added 10 for the Beavers. Bemidji State made 23 of 48 shots for 47.9 percent, canning 10 of 24 shots from the 3-point line and 13 of 16 free throws.
The rebounding battle was won by Bemidji State 33-31. Maxie Rosenbloom grabbed 10 rebounds for the Beavers while senior center
Jared Bartling hauled in a career-high 10 boards for the Wildcats.
WSC had 19 turnovers in the game with Bemidji State at 15. Aluong had three assists to lead the 'Cats while
David Andersen had two steals.
The Wildcats will be on the road next weekend, traveling to Concordia-St. Paul Friday evening at 8 p.m. and #12 Minnesota State Saturday for a 6 p.m. contest.
