St. Cloud State sank nine first-half 3-pointers while building a commanding 46-19 lead as the Huskies cruised to a 90-63 Northern Sun Conference men's basketball win over Wayne State College Friday evening at Halenbeck Hall in St. Cloud, Minnesota. SCSU improves to 14-5 overall and 10-5 in the NSIC North while the Wildcats suffer their fourth straight loss and are now 8-11 on the season and 5-10 in the NSIC South.
The host Huskies never trailed, jumping out to early 8-0 and 13-2 leads in the first 2:30 of the game. With St. Cloud State leading 23-8, the Huskies put the game out of reach by scoring 17 straight points while holding Wayne State without a basket for 7:35 to build a 40-10 lead before the first half ended with St. Cloud State leading 46-19.
St. Cloud State opened the second half scoring the first 11 points to take a commanding 57-19 lead. Both teams shot well in the second half as the Huskies hit 58.3 percent (14 of 24) while WSC connected on 50 percent in the second half on 16 of 32 as both teams scored 44 points in the second half to make the final score 90-63.
Senior guard Ty Bauschek led Wayne State scoring 19 of his game-high 21 points in the second half. It was the fourth 20-point game this season for Bauschek, who ended the night 8 for 15 from the field with three 3-pointers and 2 of 3 at the foul line.
Adol Aluong added 14 points for the Wildcats followed by senior center
Jared Bartling with 11 and
Ryan Rolfzen 10. Wayne State made 24 of 58 shots from the field for 41.4 percent, going 6 for 22 behind the 3-point line and just 9 of 19 (47.4%) at the free throw stripe.
Jordan Poydras scored 16 of his team-high 18 points in the first half to lead St. Cloud State. Damarius Cruz contributed 15 points with Kevin Levandoski adding 14 for the Huskies, who shot 52.8 percent from the field on 28 of 53 including 12 for 22 from 3-point range. SCSU was also 22 of 32 at the free throw line.
St. Cloud State held a sizeable 41-29 edge in rebounding over the Wildcats thanks to 10 caroms by Matt Craggs. Wayne State's top rebounder was
Ryan Rolfzen with nine. Senior backup guard
Gary Ross notched a team-best four steals for the Wildcats and handed out three assists along with
Damjan Sredanovic.
WSC had 19 turnovers in the game compared to 17 by St. Cloud State.
Wayne State will be in action again Saturday evening visiting Minnesota Duluth in a 6 p.m. contest.
