Early St. Cloud State Goal Stands for 1-0 Win Over Wayne State

            St. Cloud State scored their only goal of the match in the 19th minute of the match and held on for the 1-0 win against Wayne State Sunday afternoon in Northern Sun action at the WSC Soccer Complex.  St. Cloud State improves to 4-8 on the season with a 3-6 record in the NSIC while Wayne State falls to 1-10-1 with a 0-9 record in the NSIC. 
            St. Cloud State was the aggressor in the first half outshooting the Wildcats five to one in shots in the half, and scored their only goal of the match in the 19th minute by Taige Thoreson header from Gabby Fleck on a free kick set piece.  In the second half, with the wind at their back, Wayne State was the clear aggressor with nine shots to just four by the Huskies.  Wayne State had a chance to tie the match at one with a penalty kick by McKenzie Hallstrom but it was missed wide right.  The Wildcats had other opportunities during the second half, but were unable to capitalize.
            With such a strong wind influencing the teams throughout the match the total shots in the match were almost identical with Wayne State having 10 shots and St. Cloud State with nine in the match.  The teams were also whistled for fouls nearly the same amount of times with the Wildcats committing 10 fouls and nine committed by the Huskies.  Wayne State held a slight advantage in the number of corner kicks they earned in the match, earning seven total while the Huskies had only four.
            Individually, Josie Brown led the 'Cats offensively in the match with four shots and two shots on goal.  Mallory Hoyt and Kelsea Lambert added two apiece and McKenzie Hallstrom and Alex Mathers had one shot each. 
            Freshman goalkeeper Margaret Harma had one save in the loss, and now holds a 1-10-1 record on the season.
            Wayne State will be on the road next weekend, visiting #2 Minnesota State Saturday and Concordia-St. Paul Sunday in Northern Sun Conference contests beginning at 1 p.m. each day.
