Wayne State 3 Concordia-St. Paul 2 Senior forward
McKenna Adams scored on a header from a corner kick with 1:06 remaining to give Wayne State College a thrilling 3-2 win at Concordia-St. Paul Sunday afternoon in Northern Sun Conference women's soccer played at Sea Foam Stadium in St. Paul, Minnesota. It was the first league win for the Wildcats, now 2-11-1 overall and 1-10 in the NSIC while the host Golden Bears drop to 4-9-1 and 3-7-1 in league play.
Despite being outshot 8-4 in the first half, the Wildcats made the most of their four shots by scoring two goals for a 2-0 advantage at intermission. Senior defender
Alex Mathers found the back of the net at the 23:16 mark for her first goal of the season with an assist by
Mallory Hoyt to put the Wildcats in front 1-0.
WSC scored again in the 37
th minute when freshman Suenly Galves scored on a pass from Hoyt on a free kick to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead.
Seven minutes into the second half, the Wildcat lead disappeared as Concordia-St. Paul scored two goals just 30 seconds apart in the 51
st minute to even the score at 2-2.
The score remained knotted until late in the 88
th minute when Adams pushed a header off a
Mallory Hoyt corner kick with just 1:06 left in the contest, her second goal of the season, to give the Wildcats the late victory.
Concordia-St. Paul held a 16-9 edge in shots over the Wildcats including 6-3 in shots on goal. The Golden Bears had two more corner kicks than WSC, 5-3, while WSC had six fouls to just four on the Golden Bears.
Mallory Hoyt had two shots and assisted on all three goals to lead a balanced Wildcat effort offensively.
Alex Mathers had two shots that included her first goal of the season while
Suenly Galvez and
McKenna Adams each produced goals in the Wildcat win.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Kylie Comba earned the win in net for the Wildcats, credited with four saves while allowing two goals.
Wayne State will be at home next weekend, hosting the University of Mary Saturday and Minot State Sunday in NSIC contests starting at 1 p.m. each day at the WSC Soccer Complex.
