Alyssa Frauendorfer recorded 18 kills while junior outside hitter
Katie Hughes notched her seventh double-double of the season with 15 kills and 13 digs to lead #13 Wayne State in a 3-1 Northern Sun Conference volleyball win over #24 Northern State Friday evening at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. The host Wildcats improve to 13-2 overall and 6-1 in league play while the Wolves fall to 11-4 and 4-3 in the NSIC.
Despite recording eight attack errors in the first set, WSC had set point at 24-22, but the Wolves scored four straight points to take the first set 26-24.
The Wildcats rebounded in the second set and dominated for a 25-14 win, forcing seven NSU attack errors while hitting .367 with 16 kills and five attack errors.
Northern State built an early lead in the third set and was in front of the Wildcats 15-10 and 17-12 before WSC mounted a rally. The 'Cats scored six straight points off the serve of
Michaela Mestl and took a 19-17 lead following a Mestl service ace. After NSU came back for a 20-19 lead, WSC used kills from Frauendorfer and
Leisa McClintock to go ahead 21-20.
With the score tied at 22-22, WSC used a Wolve ball handling error and kills from Mestl and
Elizabeth Gebhardt to seal the third set win 25-22.
The fourth set saw WSC hold off a late Northern State rally to pick up the set win, clinching the match. Trailing 11-10, WSC reeled off four straight points forcing a Wolves timeout with the 'Cats take a 14-11 lead. The Wildcats continued the momentum and built a 19-15 lead. NSU pulled within one at 22-21 forcing a WSC timeout. But the 'Cats responded with a
Katie Hughes kill and a Wolve ball handling error to take a 24-21 lead. After NSU got within one at 24-23, WSC sealed the match with an
Elizabeth Gebhardt kill to win 25-23.
Wayne State held a .279 to .266 hitting advantage over the Wolves, recording 13 more kills than Northern State (64-51). WSC also had a 67-62 edge in digs over the Wolves, but Northern State had 12 blocks to seven by the Wildcats.
Frauendorfer led WSC with 18 kills and a .378 attack percentage to go with four blocks. Hughes added 15 kills and 13 digs for her seventh double-double of the season while Gebhardt contributed 11 kills in the WSC win.
Sophomore
Michaela Mestl led WSC in digs with 23 followed by Hughes with 13 and
Courtney VanGroningen with 11 along with a team-best four service aces. Setter
Leisa McClintock was credited with 51 set assists and had seven kills.
The Wildcats will be at home again Saturday afternoon hosting MSU Moorhead in a 4 p.m. match at Rice Auditorium.
