#7 Wayne State 99 Bemidji State 52 #7 Wayne State rebounded from a shocking loss to Minnesota Crookston by sinking 14 3-pointers Saturday evening in a 99-52 win over Bemidji State in Northern Sun Conference women's basketball played at Rice Auditorium. The Wildcats are now 9-2 overall and 3-2 in the NSIC while Bemidji State falls to 2-7 and 0-5 in league play.
The Wildcats set the tone early in the game with their perimeter shooting as senior forward
Millie Niggeling drained a pair of treys to open the game for a 6-0 lead.
Leading 12-3, WSC used 3-pointers from
Sadie Murren, Niggeling,
Jasmin Bretoi and another 3-ball from Niggeling to take a commanding 24-6 lead at the 12:56 mark of the first half.
Offensively, WSC continued to click as the Wildcats reached the 50 point mark with 4:45 to play in the half on a pair of
Jordan Spencer free throws for a 50-13 lead before finishing the half with a 63-17 lead as WSC finished the first half a sizzling 19 of 28 from the field (67.9%) including 12 for 17 (70.6%) from 3-point range.
Wildcat reserves dominated play in the second half as WSC had five players finish in double figures as all 12 players scored in the 99-52 win.
Senior forward
Millie Niggeling led WSC with 22 points, going 8 for 12 from the field and 4 of 5 from 3-point range. Senior forward
Jordan Spencer recorded a double-double, her fourth of the season, with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman reserve center
Paige Ballinger contributed 14 points in the win while
Maggie Schulte and
Ashton Yossi scored 10 points each.
Wayne State made 29 of 58 shots from the field for 50 percent, going 14 for 26 from 3-point range and 27 of 36 at the charity stripe.
Tatum Sheley led Bemidji State with 14 points followed by Sierra Senske with 11. The Beavers shot just 25.4 percent from the field, making 18 of 71 shots. BSU was 4 of 24 behind the arc and 12 for 19 at the foul line.
Wayne State held a 50-41 advantage in rebounding over Bemidji State thanks to 12 rebounds by Spencer. Schulte and
Alex Nelson each grabbed six boards. The top rebounder for Bemidji State was Mikayla Larson with nine.
Sadie Murren led WSC with five assists while Spencer recorded a team-high three steals.
The Wildcats will be at home again next weekend, hosting travel partner Augustana College in a Saturday afternoon contest starting at 4 p.m.
