4/10/2014 9:15:00 PM

Game 1 - Bemidji State 2 Wayne State 1

Game 2 - Bemidji State 7 Wayne State 3

Wayne State College dropped a Northern Sun Conference baseball doubleheader at Bemidji State Thursday afternoon as the Wildcats suffered 2-1 and 7-3 losses to the Beavers.  WSC is now 15-13 overall and 8-6 in the NSIC while BSU is 13-10 and 7-3 in league play.
In the opener, Bemidji State's Derek Masberg edged Wayne State's John Roberts in a pitcher's duel as the Wildcats were held to just one hit in a 2-1 loss to the Beavers.
Wayne State's lone run and hit of the game came in the second inning as Nick McIntee walked and later scored on Skye O'Neil's double to right center field giving the 'Cats a 1-0 lead.
Bemidji State then scored their lone runs of the game in the second inning on a one-out double and home run to make the score 2-1.  And that was all the scoring in the game as Bemidji State starter Derek Masberg did not allow a base runner after the leadoff batter in the fourth inning and retired the final 11 Wildcat batters in the 2-1 win.
O'Neil's double was the lone Wildcat hit in the contest while Bemidji State had seven hits.  WSC senior first baseman CJ Nolen saw a 14-game hit streak come to an end in the loss after going 0 for 3.
John Roberts (1-4) was tagged with the tough loss despite a strong showing.  He gave up two runs on seven hits over five innings with eight strikeouts and one walk.  Reliever Chad Kim worked the sixth inning and had one walk with one strikeout.
The second game saw the host Beavers score seven runs in the third and fourth innings to overcome an early 3-0 deficit as Bemidji State completed the sweep with a 7-3 win.
WSC took a 1-0 lead in the first on a Michael Herman double that scored Zak Leighton, who singled to open the game.  The 'Cats built a 3-0 lead in the third when Leighton walked and scored on CJ Nolen's double to right center field with another run coming home when Nick McIntee reached on an error that brought home Nolen.
But the Beavers took the lead for good with four runs in the third and added three more runs in the fourth for a 7-3 lead.  Neither team scored in the final five innings as the Beavers came away with the 7-3 win.
Bemidji State had 11 hits in the game to six for WSC.  Herman finished 2 for 4 with a double and RBI.  Nolen doubled and had an RBI while Leighton was 1 for 4 scoring two of Wayne State's three runs.  Skye O'Neil and Kevin Andersen each singled.
Sophomore starter Spencer Morris (0-1) suffered the pitching loss, giving up four runs on four hits over three innings.  Matt Schulz, Nick Ragan, Nate Everett, Matt Faulkner and Ryan Zweck each worked one inning of relief to close out Wildcat pitching in the contest.
The Wildcats will be on the road this weekend, visiting Southwest Minnesota State for a four-game NSIC series with doubleheaders on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and Sunday at 12 p.m. in Marshall, Minnesota.
