Game 1 - Southwest Minnesota State 5 Wayne State 0Game 2 - Southwest Minnesota State 3 Wayne State 1 Wayne State College was held to one run and nine hits in two games Saturday as the Wildcats dropped a Northern Sun Conference baseball doubleheader at Southwest Minnesota State by scores of 5-0 and 3-1. The Wildcats are now 15-15 overall and 8-8 in the NSIC while SMSU is 15-13 and 6-6 in the NSIC.
The opener saw the host Mustangs score four runs in the first inning to fuel the 5-0 win over the Wildcats.
WSC was held to just four hits in the game, a double by
Jake Perez, and singles by
CJ Nolen,
Alex Schleppenbach and
Skye O'Neil.
Sophomore starter
Eric Browning (4-3) was tagged with the pitching loss, allowing five runs on seven hits over 4 1/3 innings with three strikeouts and one walk. Reliever Nate Everett worked the final 1 2/3 innings and allowed just one hit with two strikeouts.
The second game saw another low-scoring contest with the Mustangs prevailing 3-1. SMSU scored two runs in the second for a 2-0 lead. The 'Cats scored their lone run of the day in the third inning on a
Alex Schleppenbach solo homer to right field. SMSU closed out the scoring with a run in the eighth inning for the 3-1 final score.
SMSU had eight hits in the game to five for the Wildcats. Schleppenbach was 1 for 3 with his solo homer while Perez was 2 for 4 with a double. Nolen doubled while
John Roberts singled for the final WSC hit.
Starter
Matt Russell (1-1) worked five innings and was charged with five hits and two runs with one walk and one strikeout.
Chad Kim pitched the next two innings and gave up two hits with four strikeouts while
Curtis Bussard worked the final inning and allowed an unearned run with one strikeout.
Wayne State and Southwest Minnesota State are scheduled to play another doubleheader Sunday at noon in Marshall, Minnesota.
