Southwest Minnesota State 12 Wayne State 3 The Wayne State College baseball team suffered its fifth straight loss Sunday, falling 12-3 at Southwest Minnesota State in Northern Sun Conference baseball played in frigid Marshall, Minnesota. The second game of the doubleheader was canceled due to bad weather. WSC is now 15-16 overall and 8-9 in league play with SMSU sporting records of 16-13 and 7-6 in the NSIC.
The host Mustangs scored at least one run in every inning during the seven inning contest, highlighted by a five-run fourth inning to put the game out of reach.
WSC scored one run in the second inning when
Michael Herman doubled and scored on a
Jake Perez single to center field.
The 'Cats added two more runs in the seventh when
John Roberts singled and scored on a wild pitch while
Chris May singled and later scored on a
Alex Kreft groundout for the second run.
SMSU had 12 hits in the game to seven for WSC. Herman's double was the lone extra base hit in the game for WSC.
Alex Schleppenbach, Perez, Roberts, May,
Alex Kreft and
Aaron Krier each singled.
Starting pitcher
Dylan McGill (2-3) suffered the pitching loss, charged with seven runs on six hits over three innings of work with three strikeouts and two walks.
Matt Schulz,
Bryce Christopher and
Joey Lenihan each recorded one inning of relief in the loss.
Wayne State will be on the road again Tuesday for a 1:30 p.m. NSIC doubleheader at Winona State.
