Chad Kim combined on a four-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts to lead Wayne State in a 1-0 10 inning win at Winona State Tuesday afternoon in the opening game of an NSIC baseball doubleheader at Loughrey Field in Winona, Minnesota to end a five-game losing streak. The Warriors came back to score a 14-1 win in the second game, giving Wayne State records of 16-17 overall and 9-10 in league play.
In the opener, Wayne State scored an unearned run in the 10
th inning to pick up a 1-0 win over the Warriors in a game that featured a combined 10 hits between the two teams.
Entering the 10
th inning, two Wildcat players had accounted for all five hits as
Michael Herman had three hits with a double while #9 batter
Aaron Krier recorded a pair of singles. With one out in the 10
th inning, shortstop
Zak Leighton reached base on an error and then scored when freshman outfielder
Jake Perez doubled to score Leighton with what turned out to be the lone run of the game.
Lefthander
John Roberts and senior reliever
Chad Kim shut down Winona State offensively, holding the Warriors to just four hits in the win. Roberts worked the first seven innings and had 10 strikeouts with just one walk while allowing two hits. Kim (1-0) earned the win by pitching the final three innings, allowing just two hits with one strikeout.
The second game saw Winona State rebound with 14 runs on 15 hits to salvage a split with a 14-1 win over the Wildcats.
Winona State scored three runs in the first and four more in the second to take a commanding 7-0 lead. Wayne State scored its lone run of the game in the sixth inning when
Aaron Krier led off the inning with a solo homer to right field.
Nick McIntee had two of Wayne State's five hits in the game with Krier adding a homer. Leighton and
Kevin Andersen each singled.
Starter
Nick Ragan (1-3) was handed the pitching loss, allowing six runs on six hits in 1 1/3 innings with one strikeout.
Ryan Zweck,
Matt Schulz and
Matt Faulkner also worked in relief for the Wildcats.
Wayne State will be in action again this weekend, visiting Minnesota Crookston for NSIC doubleheaders Friday at 1:30 p.m. and Saturday at noon in Crookston, Minnesota.
