WSC sweeps Huskies in NSIC home opener

            #17 Wayne State College used 12 kills from Alyssa Frauendorfer and 11 by Elizabeth Gebhardt to record a 25-23, 25-18 and 25-19 Northern Sun Conference volleyball sweep Friday evening over St. Cloud State at Rice Auditorium in Wayne.  The host Wildcats are now 12-1 overall and 5-0 in the NSIC while SCSU falls to 7-6 and 1-4 in league play.
            The first set saw WSC lead early, but the visiting Huskies rallied late and took a 23-22 lead on the Wildcats.  WSC then used a kill from Katie Hughes followed by an SCSU attack error and a block by Gebhardt and Alex Opperman to close out the first set with a 25-23 win.
            WSC forced St. Cloud State into 10 attack errors in the second set to cruise past the Huskies 25-18 and then completed the sweep in the third set by hitting .300 with 15 kills as the Wildcats built a 10-3 lead on their way to a 25-19 set win over the Huskies.
            Wayne State hit .269 for the match compared to .171 by St. Cloud State.  SCSU had three more kills than WSC, 44-41, but the Wildcats forced 23 attack errors on the Huskies while making just nine.  Wayne State also held a 6-3 advantage in blocks over SCSU.
            Frauendorfer led WSC with 12 kills and a .524 attack percentage with just one attack error.  Gebhardt added 11 kills with just one attack error to hit .345 for the contest.  Both players also had three blocks.
            Junior libero Courtney VanGroningen had 19 digs with sophomore Michaela Mestl adding 11 to go with a team-high two service aces.  Setter Leisa McClintock handed out 32 set assists. 
            The Wildcats will be in action at home again Saturday afternoon, hosting #2 Minnesota Duluth in an NSIC showdown starting at 4 p.m.  Both teams are 12-1 overall and 5-0 in the NSIC entering the contest.
