th-ranked Wildcats had seven players score in double figures while dominating Minnesota Duluth 91-53 Friday evening in NSIC women's basketball played in Duluth, Minnesota.
With the win, Wayne State improves to 14-3 on the season with its fifth straight win and 8-3 in the NSIC while Minnesota Duluth falls to 7-8 and 5-6 in league play.
After trailing early 5-0, WSC rattled off 19 straight points while holding Minnesota Duluth without a basket for 6:47, giving the 'Cats a 19-5 lead.
Minnesota Duluth got as close as eight at 22-14 with 8:41 remaining in the half, but the Wildcats closed the first half strong and took a commanding 40-18 lead at intermission.
WSC did not let up in the second half as reserves dominated much of the playing time. The 'Cats took their biggest lead of the game at 80-38 following a
Maggie Schulte 3-pointer with 6:43 to play and WSC cruised to the 91-53 win.
Senior forward
Millie Niggeling led seven double digit scorers for the Wildcats with 13 points. Redshirt freshman forward
Alex Nelson added a career-high 11 points off the bench while
Ashton Yossi,
Sadie Murren and
Katie Hoskins each recorded 11 points as well. Freshman forward
Maggie Schulte chipped in 10 points while freshman backup center
Paige Ballinger notched her second double-double of the season with 10 points and a career-high 14 rebounds.
Wayne State finished the game making 35 of 59 shots for 59.3 percent, matching a season-high. The 'Cats were a sizzling 14 for 27 behind the 3-point line, also matching a season-high with 14 3's. WSC was also 7 for 10 at the foul line.
Minnesota Duluth had five players score six points apiece. The Bulldogs made just 19 of 61 shots from the field for 31.1 percent, including 6 of 24 from 3-point range. UMD was also 9 of 17 at the charity stripe.
WSC held a 38-33 edge in rebounding over the Bulldogs thanks to Ballinger's career-high 14 caroms. UMD's top rebounder was Taylor Meyer with seven.
The 'Cats had just eight turnovers and 13 assists while UMD had nine turnovers and nine assists. Sophomore guard
Haley Moore handed out five assists to lead WSC.
The Wildcats will play again Saturday, visiting St. Cloud State in a 4 p.m. NSIC contest at Halenbeck Hall in St. Cloud, Minnesota.
