Hot shooting by Huskies too much for Wildcats

            The Wayne State College men's basketball team could not overcome 63.9 percent shooting (39 of 61) by St. Cloud State as the Huskies posted a 94-77 Northern Sun Conference men's basketball win over the Wildcats at Halenbeck Hall in St. Cloud, Minnesota Saturday evening.  SCSU is now 10-8 and 6-6 in the NSIC while WSC falls to 3-15 and 0-12 in league play.
            Freshman Trae VandeBerg sank back-to-back 3-pointers to open the game, giving WSC and early 6-2 lead.  The Huskies responded with a 10-0 run and took a 12-6 lead with 17:16 to play in the half.
            WSC got as close as one at 16-15 on a Kendall Jacks tip-in with 14:15 to go in the half.  The 'Cats trailed 28-21 at the 11 minute mark when the Huskies put the game out of reach with a 9-0 run to take a 37-21 lead.  The closest the 'Cats would get the rest of the night was 11 at 39-28 following a VandeBerg trey, but the Huskies went on another 9-0 run to go in front 48-28 before finishing with a 54-35 halftime lead.
            The Wildcats battled with the Huskies early in the second half, cutting the SCSU lead to nine at 66-57 following a Tyler Nagy free throw with 11:52 remaining.  St. Cloud State then went on a 16-4 run to push the lead back over 20 points and the Huskies went on to the 94-77 win.
            VandeBerg led WSC in scoring with a game-high 23 points, his second straight game of 20 or more points and the fourth 20 point game in his last eight contests.  VandeBerg was 7 for 12 from the field and 5 of 9 behind the 3-point line to go with 4 for 6 at the charity stripe.  Freshman forward Kendall Jacks added a season-high 18 points with Patrick Kurth scoring 12.
            Wayne State was 27 of 56 from the field for 48.2 percent.  The 'Cats were 7 of 21 from 3-point range and 16 for 27 at the charity stripe.
            St. Cloud State had five players in double figures led by Jordan Poydras with 22 points.  The Huskies shot 63.9 percent from the field making 39 of 61 shots.  SCSU was 8 for 18 behind the 3-point line and 8 for 14 at the foul line.
            SCSU won the rebounding battle over WSC 34-26 thanks to six rebounds by Donnell Cegers.  Jacks led WSC on the glass with six caroms.  The Huskies held a sizeable 52-36 advantage on points in the paint over the Wildcats and a 23-9 advantage in points off turnovers.
            Both teams had 14 turnovers in the contest.  Jacks had five assists for WSC while Kurth had two steals.
            The Wildcats will be at home next weekend, entertaining Upper Iowa Friday at 8 p.m. and Winona State Saturday at 6 p.m.
