WSC women win eighth straight with convincing 64-44 win over Winona State

            Wayne State College extended its win streak to eight games and four players reached double figures as the Wildcat women disposed of Winona State 64-44 in Northern Sun Conference women's basketball Saturday evening at Rice Auditorium in Wayne.
            The game was close early with one tie and one lead change.  With the score tied at 10, WSC used a Millie Niggeling jumper, a Jordan Spencer free throw, a Paige Ballinger layup and a Niggeling 3-pointer to take an 18-12 lead with 7:30 to play in the half.
            Winona State pulled within three at 20-17 on a layup by Alexis Foley with 3:27 left in the half, but WSC went on a scoring fury to end the half, producing 16 points in the final 3:27 while holding the Warriors scoreless to take a commanding 36-17 lead at intermission.
            Wayne State continued their strong play and never let Winona State back into the contest. 
            A Haley Moore 3-pointer gave Wayne State its biggest lead of the night, 58-28 with 6:49 remaining.  Wildcat reserves dominated play down the stretch and Wayne State finished with the 64-44 win.
            Senior forward Jordan Spencer led the Wildcats in scoring with 14 points followed by Ashton Yossi with 11.  Junior guard Sadie Murren and freshman reserve center Paige Ballinger each contributed 10 points in the win.
            Wayne State shot 24 of 54 from the field for 44.4 percent.  The 'Cats were 7 for 18 behind the arc and 9 of 14 at the charity stripe.
            Kayla Timmerman paced Winona State with 12 points followed by Alexis Foley and Connor Nagle with eight each.
            The Warriors were 16 for 45 shooting for 35.6 percent, going 5 of 16 from the 3-point line and 7 of 9 at the free throw stripe.
            Winona State held a 37-28 advantage in rebounding over the Wildcats thanks to nine boards from Nagle.  Wayne State's top rebounder was Ballinger with six.
            WSC forced 24 turnovers on Winona State while the Wildcats had just eight.  Wayne State held a sizeable 34-16 edge on points in the paint and 27-11 advantage in points off turnovers over the Warriors.
            Yossi handed out six of Wayne State's 15 assists while Murren had five steals.  Millie Niggeling notched two of Wayne State's four blocks in the contest.
            Wayne State will be on the road next weekend, visiting Minot State Friday night at 6 p.m. and the University of Mary Saturday at 4 p.m.
