Free throw advantage gives Minot State win over Wildcats

            Minot State used a sizeable advantage from the free throw line, making 30 of 38 compared to just 12 of 19 for Wayne State, as the host Beavers defeated the Wildcat 76-60 in Northern Sun Conference men's basketball Friday evening in Minot, North Dakota at the Minot Dome.  Minot State is now 11-10 and 6-9 in the NSIC while Wayne State is 4-17 on the season and 1-14 in league play.     
            The game was close early until a pair of five minute plus scoreless streaks by the Wildcats allowed Minot State to develop a 33-24 lead at halftime.
            WSC trailed 8-6 four minutes into the contest, then went 5:12 without a basket but still held an 11-10 lead following an Austin Esters layup with 10:48 to play in the first half.
            Freshman Tyler Nagy connected on a 3-pointer for Wayne State's final lead of the game at 14-12 with 9:46 remaining in the first half.  The Wildcats then went 5:54 without a basket, allowing Minot State to build a 20-14 lead. 
            Trae VandeBerg's 3-pointer with 3:52 to go before halftime pulled WSC within five at 24-19 before the host Beavers closed the first half with a 33-24 lead.
            Minot State used a 13-1 run early in the second half to build a 20 point lead at 50-30 with 14:41 remaining.
            With Minot State still leading 54-34 at the 12:05 mark, WSC freshman Jordan Cornelius scored eight straight points on a pair of 3-pointers and a jumper to get WSC within 12 at 59-47 with 8:02 left.
            The Beavers pushed the lead back to 17 points at 64-47 and WSC never got closer than 11 points the rest of the game as Minot State finished with the 76-60 win.
            Freshmen Jordan Cornelius, Austin Esters and Trae VandeBerg each scored 11 points for Wayne State followed by senior center Patrick Kurth with 10.
            WSC shot 37 percent from the field making 20 of 54 shots.  The 'Cats were 8 for 28 behind the 3-point line and 12 of 19 at the free throw line.
            Dominique McDonald paced Minot State with 18 points followed by Everett Robinson with 17 points.  Lamont Prosser added a double-double for the Beavers with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
            Minot State shot 44 percent from the field on 22 of 50, including 2 of 12 behind the arc.  The Beavers used 26 fouls on Wayne State to make 30 of 38 free throws in the contest.
            WSC had one more rebound than MISU, 37-36.  Jordan Cornelius led WSC with seven rebounds followed by Kendall Jacks with six while Prosser hauled in a game-high 13 caroms for the Beavers.
            Austin Esters led WSC with three steals while VandeBerg handed out a team-high three assists.
            Wayne State will be in action again Saturday evening playing at the University of Mary in a 6 p.m. contest.
