Yossi's season-high 23 leads #19 Wildcats past Minnesota State

            Senior guard Ashton Yossi scored a season-high 23 points and the Wildcat defense limited Minnesota State to just 24 percent shooting as #19 Wayne State College defeated Minnesota State 62-46 in Northern Sun Conference women's basketball played Friday evening at Rice Auditorium in Wayne.  The Wildcats, who avenged a 72-65 loss at Minnesota State on December 6th, improved to 12-3 and 6-3 in the NSIC with the win while NSIC South Division leading Minnesota State falls to 9-4 and 4-2 in league play.
            The game was close early, featuring six ties and three lead changes.  Minnesota State's final lead of the game came early at 11-8 following an Aubrey Davis 3-pointer with 13:21 to play in the half.  WSC then used a Haley Moore trey and a Millie Niggeling layup to take a 13-11 lead.
            After a Lexie Ulfers basket for MSU tied the score at 13-13, WSC took the lead for good on a three-point play by Jordan Spencer with 7:45 to play in the half.
            MSU pulled within one at 20-19, but WSC finished the half with a 28-25 lead.
            WSC got off to a quick start in the second half and took an eight-point lead at 35-27 following an Alex Nelson layup at the 15:35 mark. 
            The visiting Mavericks got within one point at 36-35 following 3-point baskets by Davis and Ashley Olson.  With WSC leading 37-36, the Wildcats used a 13-2 run over the next 7:27 and put the game out of reach with an Ashton Yossi layup to put the 'Cats in front 50-38 with 5:22 to play.
            After MSU got within eight at 50-42, the 'Cats scored nine of the next 11 points and took a 59-44 lead on a Jordan Spencer jumper with 2:28 to play and WSC finished with the 62-46 win.
            Yossi led all scorers with 23 points, going a perfect 10 for 10 at the foul line to stay the top free throw shooter in the NSIC.  Spencer also reached double figures for the 'Cats with 11 points. 
            Wayne State made 20 of 52 shots for 38.5 percent, going 4 for 18 at the 3-point line and 18 for 27 at the free throw line.
            Lexie Ulfers led Minnesota State in scoring with 12 points followed by Jamie Bresnahan with 10.  The Mavericks were held to just 23.9 percent shooting by the Wildcats on 16 of 67, going 3 of 22 behind the arc and 11 for 15 at the charity stripe.
            WSC won the rebounding battle over MSU 49-40 thanks to nine rebounds from Spencer and eight by Alex Nelson.  Ulfers, Davis and Sammie Delzotto each grabbed six boards for the Mavericks. 
            Wayne State had 17 turnovers in the game to 13 for the Mavericks.  Millie Niggeling had four steals and two blocks for the Wildcats while Maggie Schulte, Nelson and Sadie Murren each had two assists.
            The Wildcats will be at home again Saturday hosting Concordia-St. Paul in a 4 p.m. contest at Rice Auditorium.
