#24 WSC women upset at Rockhurst 68-64

            Rockhurst University used 11 3-pointers and a 23-9 advantage in points off turnovers to upset #24 Wayne State College 68-64 Wednesday evening in non-conference women's basketball played at Mason Halpin Field House in Kansas City, Missouri.  The Wildcats drop to 2-1 on the season while the host Hawks improve to 2-0.
            After trailing 5-0 early, WSC came back and built a 22-14 first quarter lead and kept the lead throughout the first half. 
            Following the slow start, WSC went on a 14-2 run and took a 14-7 lead on a Maggie Schulte 3-pointer with 3:31 left in the first quarter.  The 'Cats closed out the quarter on a Haley Moore trey to give WSC a 22-14 lead after one quarter.
            WSC then went cold from the field in the second quarter, making just two baskets, but the 'Cats still held the lead at intermission.
            A Paige Ballinger three-point play to start the second quarter put WSC in front 25-14.  But the 'Cats went the next 6:28 without a basket until an Alisa Petersen layup at the 2:28 mark gave WSC a 33-26 lead.  However, Rockhurst closed the half strong and cut the WSC advantage to 35-32 at intermission.
            WSC opened the second half with a Ballinger basket and pair of free throws to take their biggest lead of the second half at 39-32.  The 'Cats still led by five at 45-40 until the host Hawks closed the third quarter scoring seven of the final eight points for a 47-46 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
            The 'Cats took a 3-point lead early in the fourth quarter.  Wayne State's final lead came at 54-53 on a Ballinger layup with 6:42 remaining. 
            Rockhurst then scored eight of the next 10 points to take a 61-56 lead with 3:15 to play.  WSC got as close as one at 61-60 on a Ballinger jumper with 1:43 to play, but Rockhurst got a 3-pointer from Mary Dineen with 16 seconds to play for a 66-61 lead.  Schulte drained a trey with six seconds to play, cutting the Hawk lead to 66-64.  But Dineen sealed the win with a pair of free throws with three seconds left for the 68-64 win.
            Ballinger led Wayne State in scoring with 23 points on 9 of 13 shooting from the field to go with a perfect 5 of 5 at the charity stripe.  Schulte contributed 17 points while junior forward Anna Martensen recorded a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
            Wayne State shot 22 of 53 from the field for 41.5 percent.  The 'Cats were just 5 of 21 (23.8%) from the 3-point line and 15 for 19 at the free throw line.
            For Rockhurst, junior guard Mary Dineen scored a game-high 24 points for the Hawks followed by Lauren Meyers with 12 points.  The Hawks made 26 of 60 from the floor for 43.3 percent, going 11 of 32 from the 3-point line and 5 of 5 at the charity stripe.
            Wayne State held a 41-27 advantage in rebounding over Rockhurst, including 14-7 on the offensive glass.  Martensen led all rebounders in the contest with 13 caroms followed by Schulte with seven.  The Wildcats were charged with 17 turnovers to just nine by Rockhurst, resulting in a 23-9 advantage by the Hawks in points off turnovers.
            The Wildcats will return to action tomorrow (Thursday) evening hosting 4-3 York College in a non-conference game at Rice Auditorium starting at 7 p.m.
