Cold shooting haunts Wildcat women in 74-59 loss to Concordia-St. Paul

            Wayne State College shot just 27 percent from the field (19 of 70) in suffering a 74-59 loss at home Friday evening to Concordia-St. Paul in Northern Sun Conference women's basketball played at Rice Auditorium in Wayne.  The host Wildcats drop to 4-3 and 1-1 in the NSIC while Concordia-St. Paul is now 5-2 and 1-0 in the league.  It was just the eighth loss in Rice Auditorium for Wayne State in the last seven seasons (90-8) with the Golden Bears handing WSC three of those losses at home.
            The visiting Golden Bears took a 10-5 lead to start the game.  With the score tied at 16 with 2:18 to play in the first quarter, WSC ignited offensively scoring 10 points to close the quarter, highlighted by a jumper and 3-pointer from Maggie Schulte and a trey by Jasmin Bretoi, to take a 26-19 lead at the end of the quarter.
            After the 'Cats took a 28-19 lead early in the second quarter, Concordia-St. Paul used a 11-2 run to knot the score at 30-30 with 6:32 to play in the half. 
            The two teams exchanged the lead three times with three ties before Concordia-St. Paul finished with a 44-41 lead at intermission.
            Concordia-St. Paul started to pull away in the second half as WSC made just 4 of 29 shots in the second half (13.8%) and was never able to mount a comeback.
            The Wildcats made just one basket in the third quarter and trailed 58-48 entering the fourth quarter.
            Junior forward Anna Martensen made a layup to open the fourth quarter cutting the CU lead to eight at 58-50, but that would be as close as the Wildcats would get the rest of the game as the Golden Bears pulled away for the 74-59 win.
            Wayne State finished the game 19 of 70 from the field for 27 percent, including 4 for 29 in the second half.  The 'Cats were 4 of 15 behind the arc and 17 for 30 at the free throw line.
            Sophomore forward Maggie Schulte led Wayne State in scoring with 15 points while junior forward Anna Martensen recorded her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
            Concordia-St. Paul shot 29 of 66 from the field for 43.9 percent, going 4 of 13 from the 3-point line and 12 for 20 at the charity stripe.
            Anna Schmitt led CU in scoring with 19 points, one of five players in double figures.  Caitlyn Russell had 15 points, Kionda Nicks 13 and Hanna Vidlund and Lauren Shifflett each finished with 10.
            Wayne State held a 48-45 edge in rebounding over Concordia-St. Paul thanks to 12 rebounds from Martensen and 10 by Paige Ballinger
            Both teams had 18 turnovers, but Concordia-St. Paul held a 38-22 edge on points in the paint and a 37-14 advantage in bench scoring over the Wildcats.
            Sadie Murren had four assists and four steals for the Wildcats.  
            The Wildcats will be in action again Saturday hosting Minnesota State in a 4 p.m. contest at Rice Auditorium.
