Wayne State College hit four home runs and scored double digits in both games for the first time this season as the Wildcats notched a 10-4 and 14-2 sweep over Minot State in Northern Sun Conference baseball played Sunday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne. WSC improves to 8-8 on the season and 3-1 in the NSIC while Minot State falls to 4-11 and 1-3 in league play.
The opener saw senior righthander Mike Frericks fire a complete game while junior leftfielder Nate Ackerman went 2 for 4 with a homer and four RBI's to carry the Wildcats in a 10-4 win.
After Minot State took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second, WSC countered with a three-run bottom of the second thanks to a two-run single by
Aaron Krier and an RBI single from
Zak Leighton.
WSC took a 5-2 lead in the fourth when
Kevin Andersen scored on a Minot State throwing error with the other run coming on a Ackerman RBI single.
The 'Cats broke the game open with a five-run fifth, highlighted by Ackerman's three-run blast over the center field wall.
Curtis Bussard contributed a two-run single in the inning.
Minot State closed out the scoring with two runs in the sixth for the 10-4 win.
WSC had nine hits in the game with Minot State recording eight. Ackerman was 2 for 4 with a homer and four RBI's while
Michael Herman finished 2 for 3.
Kevin Andersen was 2 for 4 with a double and two runs scored.
Frericks improved to 2-0 on the season with the complete game win on the mound, allowing eight hits and four runs with five strikeouts and two walks.
The second game saw Ackerman, Andersen and
Chris May hit home runs as the Wildcats used five run innings in the third and fourth to take a 14-2 win in seven innings.
With Minot State leading 1-0 after 2 ½ innings of play, WSC used back-to-back five run innings to take control of the game. Ackerman blasted a two-run homer to left center field with
Tanner Simons adding a two-run double in the third inning.
In the fourth, Andersen led off with a solo homer followed by run-scoring singles from Ackerman, Herman and
Albert Johnson.
WSC used a
Chris May three run homer in the sixth inning to close out the scoring as the Wildcats completed the sweep with the 14-2 win.
The Wildcats had a season-high 15 hits in the win.
Albert Johnson was a perfect 4 for 4 with two runs scored. Simons finished 2 for 3 with three RBI's while Ackerman was 2 for 4 with a homer and three RBI's. Herman had a 2 for 4 game with two runs scored while Andersen collected two hits with two runs scored.
Dylan McGill worked five innings to earn the pitching win, moving to 3-0 on the season. He allowed five hits and two runs (one earned) with nine strikeouts and one walk.
Joey Lenihan and
Spencer Morris each pitched one inning of relief for the Wildcats.
Wayne State will be at home again next weekend, hosting Northern State in a four-game NSIC series with doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday starting at noon each day.
