Wildcats sweep Augustana, take weekend series 3-1

            Despite being outhit in both games, Wayne State College notched a sweep over Augustana College Sunday afternoon 9-7 in 8 innings and 8-5 to take three out of four games from the Vikings in the weekend NSIC baseball series played at Karras Park in Sioux Falls.  The Wildcats improve to 18-19 and are now tied for seventh in the NSIC with a 13-11 league mark while Augustana is 22-15 and 13-9 (fourth) in the NSIC.
            The first game saw Wayne State score four runs in the top of the eighth inning, then hold off a Viking rally in the bottom of the eighth for a 9-7 win.
            WSC trailed 4-1 after one inning, but scored two runs in the second and fifth innings to take a 5-4 lead.  Curtis Bussard had an RBI single and Nate Ackerman produced an RBI double for the second inning runs while Tanner Simons and Kevin Anderson had RBI doubles in the fifth inning.
            Augustana tied the score in the bottom of the fifth at 5-5 sending the game into extra innings.  In the top of the eighth, Ackerman's RBI double scored Quinn McGill with the first run of the inning.  Ackerman scored on an Albert Johnson single while Simons closed out the inning with a two-run single that scored Johnson and John Roberts
            The Vikings made the game interesting in the bottom of the seventh scoring two runs while loading the bases on reliever Curtis Bussard until the junior lefthander got Alex Fink to groundout to second to end the game for a 9-7 win.
            WSC had 14 hits in the win with six different players recording two hits apiece.  Ackerman was 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles and two RBI's.  Simons finished 2 for 4 with a double, single and three RBI's while McGill and Andersen each went 2 for 5 with a double and single.
            Starter Dylan McGill worked the first five innings, allowing 11 hits and five runs with eight strikeouts and one walk.  Reliever Nick Ragan (1-3) picked up the win, pitching a perfect seventh inning with two strikeouts.
            The second game saw the Wildcats build a 5-0 lead in the first two innings as WSC completed the sweep with an 8-5 win over the Vikings.
            WSC posted four runs in the first inning on just three hits.  Albert Johnson had a two-run single and Tanner Simons an RBI double for big hits in the inning.  A Nate Ackerman RBI triple in the second scored Zak Leighton to give WSC a 5-0 advantage.
            After Augustana produced single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to get within 5-2, the Wildcats took an 8-2 lead with three runs in the top of the sixth.  Bussard had a two-run single with John Roberts reaching on an error to score Zak Leighton, who was hit by a pitch.
            Augustana closed out the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the final score 8-5.
            WSC had eight hits in the contest, two less than the Vikings.  Bussard was 2 for 4 with two RBI's to lead the way.  Ackerman tripled and Simons doubled while Leighton, Andersen, Johnson and John Roberts each singled, giving Roberts a 13-game hit streak.
            Sophomore left hander Kyle Kennebeck, making his first start in 13 appearances this season, recorded the pitching win to improve to 4-2 on the season.  He worked 4 2/3 innings, allowing just two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and three walks.  Nick Ragan pitched the final 2 1/3 innings and was charged with three runs, all unearned, on three hits with one strikeout and two walks.
            Wayne State will conclude a 16-game road trip with an NSIC doubleheader at Sioux Falls on Wednesday afternoon starting at 1:30 p.m.
