Schulte ties career-high in Wayne State win over Minot State

            Sophomore forward Maggie Schulte tied a career-high with 23 points to lead four Wildcat players in double figures as Wayne State College rolled to an 80-60 Northern Sun Conference women's basketball victory over Minot State Saturday afternoon at Rice Auditorium in Wayne.  The host Wildcats improve to 12-8 overall and 9-6 in the NSIC while MISU slips to 8-13 and 5-10 in league play.
            After exchanging baskets in the first two minutes of the game, WSC reeled off nine straight points to take the lead for good at 11-4.
            WSC pushed the lead to 10 at 16-6 at the 3:19 mark of the first quarter, but Minot State went on a 10-2 run and got as close as two at 18-16 before the Wildcats finished the first quarter with a 20-16 lead.
            The Wildcats took control of the first half with a scoring surge at the end of the second quarter.  With WSC leading 26-22 at the 4:10 mark, the 'Cats used 3-pointers from Schulte, Haley Moore and another long ball from Schulte to take a 13 point lead at 35-22 before finishing the first half with a 37-28 lead.
            Wayne State scored the first five points of the second half on a Sadie Murren 3-pointer and Schulte jumper for a 14 point lead at 42-28 and the Wildcats never let the Beavers closer than 11 the rest of the night as WSC held a 58-43 lead after three quarters.
            The Wildcats' biggest lead of the night came on a Schulte 3-pointer with three minutes left in the game at 77-53 and Wayne State finished with an 80-60 win.
            Schulte paced Wayne State in scoring with her 23 points, going 9 of 16 from the field and 5 of 8 from 3-point range.  Murren also reached double figures with 15 points to go with five assists while Moore and Paige Ballinger each finished with 10 points.
            WSC shot 30 of 67 from the field for 44.8 percent.  The 'Cats sank a season-high 14 3-pointers in the game, going 14 of 37 beyond the arc, and made all six free throw attempts.
            For Minot State, Savana Kingsbury scored 17 points to lead the Beavers. 
            MISU shot 43.4 percent from the floor making 23 of 53 shots.  The Beavers were 2 of 11 from the 3-point line and 12 for 15 at the charity stripe.
            WSC held a 36-29 advantage in rebounding over Minot State thanks to six caroms by Anna Martensen and Haley Moore while Kingsbury hauled in six boards for the Beavers.
            MISU had 24 turnovers in the game while creating 17 steals.  Wayne State had 20 turnovers with 19 assists and 13 steals.  Murren and Moore each handed out five assists for the 'Cats.
            The Wildcats will be in action again Sunday afternoon hosting the University of Mary in a 1 p.m. contest at Rice Auditorium.
