Box Score MSU Moorhead scored the game's final eight points after Wayne State took a rare lead late in the game as the Dragons recorded a 67-59 Northern Sun Conference women's basketball win over the Wildcats at Nemzek Fieldhouse in Moorhead, Minnesota Friday evening. The host Dragons improve to 16-4 and 13-4 in the NSIC while dropping Wayne State to 13-9 and 10-7 in league play.
The host Dragons held the lead for 34:55 of the contest with WSC rallying midway through the fourth quarter to take a rare lead at 59-58 before MSU Moorhead finished with the game's final eight points for the victory.
WSC started the game making three of its first four shots to grab an early 7-4 lead. But MSU Moorhead responded with an 11-0 run over the next 4:59 and took a 15-7 lead before reserve center
Alisa Petersen ended the scoring drought with a basket at the 2:15 mark. The Dragons finished the first quarter with a 17-11 lead.
MSU Moorhead pushed the lead to nine several times in the second quarter before the Wildcats cut the Dragon advantage to five at halftime 27-22.
The Wildcats used baskets by
Maggie Schulte and
Kacie O'Connor to start the third quarter, getting WSC within one at 27-26 at the 7:41 mark of the third quarter.
But MSU Moorhead scored 11 of the next 13 points to take their biggest lead of the game at 38-28 following a Heather Strese layup with 4:18 to play in the third quarter.
Wayne State countered with their own 11-2 run over the next 2:50 and was within one at 40-39 following an
Anna Martensen free throw with 1:28 left in the quarter before finishing the third quarter trailing 44-42.
A Martensen three point play with 7:59 remaining tied the score at 45-45.
But MSU Moorhead's Morgan Banasik scored the next seven points in just 1:07 on a 3-pointer, jumper and two free throws, to put the Dragons in front 52-45.
Later in the quarter, WSC used a Schulte basket, 3-pointer and layup by
Sadie Murren and a pair of
Alisa Petersen free throws to take a 59-58 lead with 2:10 to play.
But the Dragons got a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer from Banasek to take the lead for good at 63-59 and MSU Moorhead added four free throws in the final 36 seconds to post the 67-59 win.
Martensen led Wayne State in scoring with a career-high 18 points while
Sadie Murren also reached double figures with 13. Wayne State's leading scorer
Paige Ballinger played just 12 minutes in the game and was held to five points, leaving the contest late in the third quarter with an injury.
Wayne State shot 36.2 percent from the field on 21 of 58 shots. The 'Cats were 3 of 11 behind the arc and 14 for 22 at the charity stripe.
MSU Moorhead was led by Morgan Banasik's game-high 23 points followed by Heather Strese with 21. Cassidy Thorson also reached double figures with 10 points.
The Dragons made just 23 of 66 shots for 34.8 percent, going 4 for 13 from the 3-point line and 17 of 18 at the foul line.
MSU Moorhead held a 48-39 advantage in rebounds over WSC with Strese grabbing 10 boards for the Dragons while Schulte and
Alisa Petersen each grabbed seven rebounds for WSC.
WSC had 20 turnovers in the contest to 13 by MSU Moorhead. The Dragons held a 15-8 edge in second chance points over the Wildcats while WSC outscored MSUM in points off turnovers 14-10 and bench points 13-6.
Wayne State will play again Saturday in a 4 p.m. contest at Northern State.
