Wildcats fall at SMSU 86-65

            Southwest Minnesota State shooting was too much for the Wildcats as the Mustangs earned an 86-65 Northern Sun Conference men's basketball victory Sunday afternoon in Marshall, Minnesota.  The Wildcats fall to 9-7 and 4-4 in the Northern Sun while the Mustangs improve to 10-4 and 6-2.
            After hanging with the Mustangs for the first minutes of the game, SMSU went on a 14-5 run to take a 24-13 lead with 12:30 to play in the first half.  Trevin Joseph hit a jumper at the 8:12 mark to cut the lead to 26-22, but the Wildcats would not get any closer as the Mustangs took a 52-32 lead into the intermission.
            The Wildcats did not shoot a free throw in the first half while the Mustangs made 9 of 12 at the free throw line.
            Wayne State started the second half with layups from Jordan Cornelius and Kendall Jacks and a free throw from Jacks to cut into the SMSU lead 54-37, but the host Mustangs were able to push the lead back up to 20 points making the score 62-42 with 13:18 to play.
            Southwest Minnesota State cruised the rest of the way as Wayne State never got closer than 17 points as the Mustangs went onto win 86-65.
            Trevin Joseph led the Wildcats in scoring with 15 points.  Junior Kendall Jacks added 10 points while junior Vance Janssen added nine. 
            Wayne State shot 42.9 percent from the field on 27 of 63 and 6 of 20 from behind the arc.  The Wildcats were just 5 for 9 from the charity stripe.
            Carter Kirk paced the Mustangs with a game-high 23 points and 18 rebounds followed by Ryan Bruggeman, KJ Davis and Kenny Byers all adding 11 points. 
            SMSU made 31 of 59 shots for 52.5 percent shooting including 9 of 17 from 3-point range.  The Mustangs were 15 for 22 at the free throw line.
            Southwest Minnesota State held a 44-26 advantage in rebounding over WSC as Janssen hauled in five boards for the 'Cats.
            Wayne State will be at home Friday evening hosting Concordia-St. Paul in an 8 p.m. contest at Rice Auditorium.
