Wayne State overcame a slow start to beat Sioux Falls 80-68 Saturday night at the Stewart Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The Wildcats move to 9-17 and 7-13 in the NSIC while the Cougars drop to 13-15 overall and 9-11 in league play.
Sioux Falls built an early 21-11 lead in the game with 11:49 to play in the first half. WSC then went on a 14-2 run to take their first lead of the game 25-23 off a
JJ Zumbrennen 3-pointer at the 8:08 mark.
The final eight minutes of the half experienced five ties and lead changes as the Wildcats headed into the intermission with a 41-34 lead.
Wayne State came out of the break strong with
Kendall Jacks scoring the first points of the second half on a 3-pointer with 18:46 to play. Sioux Falls responded with a three-pointer by Clint Thomas two minutes later to cut the lead back to seven points but that was as close as the Cougars would get to the Wildcats.
WSC took their biggest lead of the night 67-51 following a 3-point play by
Austin Esters with just over six minutes to play in the contest.
At the 3:58 mark, USF cut the lead to nine but WSC used a
Vance Janssen layup and a pair of made free throws from
Brian Goodwin and Janssen to push the lead back to fifteen.
Neither team scored again until Daniel Hurtt hit a 3-pointer for Sioux Falls with 34 seconds left to close out the scoring for the game giving Wayne State a 80-68 victory.
Wayne State made 27 of 52 shots (51.9%), sinking 10 of 19 3-pointers and 16 of 19 free throws in the contest.
WSC had four players reach double-figures. Jacks led the Wildcats with 17 points followed by
Jordan Cornelius (12), Janssen (11) and Goodwin (10).
USF shot 25 of 56 from the floor, making 6 of 17 threes and 12 of 15 from the charity stripe.
Daniel Hurtt had 20 points to lead the Cougars in scoring.
The Wildcats were outrebounded 33-21 by the Cougars. Cornelius and Janssen both hauled in five rebounds for the 'Cats.
Janssen handed out five assists and was credited with two steals while Cornelius added four assists.
Wayne State will be at home next weekend to conclude the regular season, hosting Upper Iowa Friday evening at 8 p.m. and Winona State Saturday at 6 p.m.
