Box Score MSU Moorhead 86 Wayne State 84 (OT)

Wayne State's Maggie Schulte drained a 3-pointer at the end of regulation to send the game into overtime, but MSU Moorhead rallied in the extra session and outlasted the Wildcats 86-84 in overtime in a Northern Sun Conference women's basketball game played Saturday evening at Nemzek Fieldhouse in Moorhead, Minnesota.  The host Dragons improved to 13-3 and 10-2 in league play while WSC falls to 14-6 and 8-4 in NSIC games.
Junior reserve guard Maggie Lowe sparked the Wildcats in the first quarter, scoring nine straight points on back-to-back treys and an old-fashioned three-point play to put WSC in front 17-9 at the 2:31 mark of the first quarter.
But MSUM went on a 14-1 run to end the quarter and put the Dragons ahead 23-18 after one quarter.
WSC trailed most of the second quarter, but tied the score at 30-30 on a pair of Schulte free throws with 2:43 to go before halftime before the Dragons ended the half with a 35-32 lead.
A late third quarter scoring surge gave MSU Moorhead their first double-digit lead of the night at 51-41 and the Dragons closed the quarter with a 56-47 advantage.
MSU Moorhead pushed the lead to 64-51 with 7:42 to play and still led 71-63 with 2:36 to play when the Wildcats stormed back.
Schulte and Kacie O'Connor hit back-to-back 3's to trim the Dragon lead to 71-69.  After a MSUM basket, Schulte hit another trey to cut the lead to 73-72 with 9.3 remaining.
MSU Moorhead's Drew Sannes made two free throws with 4.9 to play giving the Dragons a 75-72 lead.
Schulte took the inbounds pass from Maggie Lowe and canned a 3-pointer from the right wing as time expired to send the game into overtime at 75-75.
Andrea Larson and Schulte each hit 3-pointers early in the overtime for WSC and the 'Cats took an 84-80 lead after Schulte went 1 of 2 at the foul line with 1:58 remaining.
MSU Moorhead's Jacky Volkert hit a jumper to cut the lead to 84-82.  WSC then had turnovers on their next two possessions and Volkert hit a trey for the Dragons with 29 seconds left to go in front 85-84.
A missed Wildcat shot by Schulte with 14 seconds resulted in WSC fouling Volkert, who made 1 of 2 at the line to give the Dragons an 86-84 lead with 13.5 left in overtime.
WSC set up for the final shot and Schulte's attempt from the right side of the circle was strong and the Dragons held on for the 86-84 overtime win.
Schulte poured in a game-high 28 points to lead Wayne State in scoring, going 8 of 14 from the floor, 6 for 7 behind the arc and 6 for 8 at the foul line.  Paige Ballinger and Brittany Bongartz added 13 points each while Maggie Lowe and Andrea Larson each recorded 12 points.
Wayne State shot 45.6 percent from the floor making 26 of 57 shots, including 13 of 24 (54.2%) from the 3-point line.  The 'Cats were also 19 for 24 at the free throw stripe.
Cassidy Thorson had a big game for MSU Moorhead with 25 points on 7 of 16 from the 3-point line.  Jacky Volkert added 22 points and 10 assists while Drew Sannes scored 19 points and grabbed nine boards.
The Dragons made 28 of 65 shots for 43.1 percent, including 13 of 30 behind the arc.  MSUM was 17 for 20 at the free throw line.
MSU Moorhead out-rebounded WSC 40-31 thanks to 10 boards from Kourtney Selensky while Schulte and Andrea Larson each hauled in five boards for WSC.
Both teams had 16 turnovers, but MSUM held a 17-6 edge in points off turnovers and 15-6 in second chance points thanks to an 11-4 advantage in offensive rebounds over the Wildcats.
Wayne State returns to the friendly confines of Rice Auditorium next weekend to start a four-game home stand.  The Wildcats entertain Winona State Friday night at 6 p.m. and Upper Iowa Saturday at 4 p.m.
