Wayne State women smother Winona State

            Wayne State held Winona State to just 25 percent shooting while three players scored in double figures as the Wildcats rolled to a 74-37 Northern Sun Conference women's basketball win over Winona State Friday evening at Rice Auditorium in Wayne.  The host Wildcats improved to 15-6 and 9-4 in the NSIC South while Winona State is now 13-4 and also 9-4 in league play.
            The Wildcats dominated the game despite the team's top two scorers, Maggie Schulte and Paige Ballinger, going scoreless in the first half while scoring a combined nine points.
`           WSC made up for the lack of scoring from its seniors by knocking down 10 3-pointers while outscoring Winona State's bench 33-4 in the win.
            Winona State held a 10-9 lead in the first quarter until Wayne State went on a 8-0 run to end the quarter giving the Wildcats a 17-10 lead.
            The second quarter saw Wayne State use four 3-pointers, three from Andrea Larson and one from Evelyn Knox, to push the score to 37-21 heading into halftime.   
            WSC held Winona State to single-digit scoring (8 points) in both quarters of the second half, holding WSU to 3 of 12 shooting in the third quarter taking a 52-29 lead into the fourth quarter.
            The Wayne State lead continued to grow in the final quarter as the Wildcats shot 50 percent from the field.  Wildcat reserves closed out the final four minutes of the game as WSC eased to a 74-37 win over the Warriors. 
            Freshman Erin Norling led Wayne State in scoring with 17 points, going 8 for 12 from the field.  Junior Andrea Larson and sophomore Evelyn Knox added 12 and 11 points for the 'Cats.
            Wayne State made 27 of 63 shots from the field for 43.5 percent, going 10 of 29 behind the arc, along with 10 for 11 (90.9%) at the charity stripe.
            Allie Pickrain led the Warriors in scoring with nine points followed by Kayla Schaefer with eight points.
            Winona State finished the game shooting just 25 percent from the field (16 for 64), going 3 of 18 from the 3-point line and 2 of 4 from the free throw line.
            WSU held a 43-40 edge in rebounding while WSC outscored the Warriors 28-14 in the paint and 17-4 in second chance points.  The Wildcats forced 14 turnovers while the Warriors only forced seven. 
            Senior Maggie Schulte led WSC with five assists followed by freshman Halley Busse with three.  Busse, senior Kacie O'Connor and Schulte were all credited with two steals for the 'Cats while Paige Ballinger recorded two blocks. 
            The Wildcats will be at home again Saturday afternoon hosting Upper Iowa at 4 p.m.
