Wildcat men outlast UMD in overtime - Janssen scores career-high 22 points

            For the fourth time in the last nine meetings, Wayne State and Minnesota Duluth battled to an overtime contest in men's basketball and the Wildcats needed 57.9 percent shooting to outlast the Bulldogs in overtime 88-86 Saturday night in a Northern Sun Conference matchup played at Rice Auditorium.  WSC is now 12-12 and 7-9 in the NSIC while UMD drops to 9-12 and 5-10 in league play.
            Both teams shot the same in the contest – going 33 of 57 for 57.9 percent.  UMD was even more impressive in the first half, going 18 of 25 for 72 percent, while WSC was 15 of 24 for 62.5 percent, as the Bulldogs held a 45-39 lead at intermission.
            WSC opened the second half strong, turning a 47-39 deficit into a 56-49 lead with 13:51 to play following a Jordan Cornelius trey.   
            UMD battled back and regained the lead at 65-64 on a Trevon Entwisle 3-pointer with 7:51 remaining.
            Following the game's seventh tie at 67-67, another Cornelius 3-pointer gave WSC a 70-67 lead and the 'Cats pushed the lead to six at 76-70 with 1:34 to play.
            But the Bulldogs used 3-pointers from Logan Rohrscheib and Entwisle with the latter coming on a 27-footer from the left wing with six seconds left sending the game into overtime at 76-76.
            The overtime session was close with neither team leading by more than three points. 
            Cornelius put the 'Cats in front 87-84 with 28 seconds to play.  UMD's Brandon Myer converted on the next possession to cut the deficit to 87-86 with 14 seconds remaining.
            UMD fouled Wayne State's Kendall Jacks with 12 seconds to play and Jacks made 1 of 2 at the line to put the 'Cats ahead 88-86.
            The Bulldogs went to Myer for the game-tying shot, but was strong and a put back by Mamadou Ngom was off the mark as the Wildcats held on for the 88-86 win.
            Junior guard Vance Janssen scored a career-high 22 points on 9 of 15 shooting to lead the Wildcats in scoring.  Jacks finished with 21 while Cornelius and Trevin Joseph also hit double figures with 16 and 12 respectively.
            WSC made 33 of 57 shots for 57.9 percent, going 8 of 16 from the 3-point line and 14 of 17 (82.4%) at the free throw stripe.
            Brandon Myer led UMD with 20 points followed by Sean Burns with 18.  Logan Rohrscheib and Entwisle added 17 and 14 points each.
            UMD was an identical 33 of 57 from the field for 57.9 percent, but was 13 for 20 (65%) behind the arc and 7 for 11 at the free throw line.
            Minnesota Duluth won the rebounding battle over WSC 29-22 with Burns hauling in eight for the Bulldogs while Cornelius grabbed nine rebounds for WSC. 
            WSC forced 21 turnovers on UMD, nine more than the Wildcats, resulting in a 26-17 edge in points off turnovers. 
            Janssen had five assists and four steals for the Wildcats while Brian Goodwin added four assists and three steals.
            The Wildcats will be on the road next weekend, visiting Bemidji State Friday evening at 8 p.m. and Minnesota Crookston Saturday at 6 p.m.
