DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Wildcats grab their third sweep in as many games as the trio of
Alyssa Ballenger,
Tarrin Beller, and
Jaci Brahmer combine for 28 kills and 12 blocks against Valdosta State (Ga.) in Saturday morning action.
        Scores of the match in favor of Wayne State were 25-15, 25-18, and 25-17 as the Wildcats continue their hot streak in Florida. Wayne State moves to 3-0 on the season, failing to lose a single set thus far.
        Fresh off of victories the day before, Wayne State had no issue getting off to a hot start. A 9-2 start from the Cats soon extended to 15-5. The lead never sunk below four, as the Wildcats rolled to a 25-15 score in the first set. Ballenger led the Wildcats with five kills, while sophomore Brahmer added three kills of her own on 1.000 hitting.
        The Wildcats worked their way through a battle in the second, trading momentum swings with the Blazers. Up 14-13, Wayne State found the same first set rhythm behind kills from Brahmer, Ballenger, and sophomore
Maddie Knobbe as they went on a 9-2 run, earning a second set victory after an attacking error and set-ending block from Beller and
Gabby Sullivan. The Wildcats combined for seven blocks to help separate the sides.
        Wayne State came out the intermission swinging, getting off to a 9-3 spurt to force a timeout from Valdosta State. The Cats didn't stop there, topping their previous run with a 10-3 run to give themselves a sizable lead that wasn't threatened the rest of the way. The Blazers outscored the Wildcats 11-6 the rest of the way, but the day belonged to Wayne State.
        Ballenger had a game-high 11 kills, while Beller and Brahmer followed with 10 and seven respectively. The Wildcats recorded 12 team blocks, with Beller (five), Brahmer (five), Knobbe, (four), and
Megan Gebhardt (three) leading the way. Gebhardt paved her way to 33 assists, while both
Katie Stephens (11) and
Haley Kauth (10) recorded double-digit digs.
        Wayne State takes on tournament hosts Embry-Riddle later this evening.
