DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Double-digit kills from Katie Stephens paces the Wildcat attack as they sweep tournament hosts Embry-Riddle on Saturday evening.
Scores in favor of the Wildcats were 25-14, 25-21, and 25-16. Wayne State moves to 4-0 on the season as they leave their Florida trip.
The Wildcats went to Jaci Brahmer early and often in the first set, as she accounted for four of the first 11 points on .667 hitting to help Wayne State get off to an 11-6 lead, forcing an Eagle timeout. An 8-0 Wayne State sealed the first set at 25-14, largely in part due to hitting .370 in the set, while Embry-Riddle was held to .000 hitting.
It was the Eagles turn to get out to a strong start in the second set, clawing their way to a 10-7 lead. Three kills from Stephens helped lead an 8-1 charge to flip the momentum back towards the Wildcats, as they maintained it to roll to a 25-21 win and a 2-0 advantage heading to the intermission.
Looking to end the tournament without dropping a set, Wayne State contested Embry-Riddle tightly to a 10-11 mark before being able to separate themselves from the Eagles with a mini 5-0 run. The Eagles never were able to close the gap to within three, as the Wildcats ended the third set at 25-16 finished their weekend unblemished.
Stephens led the way for the Wildcats, tying for a game-high 10 kills. Brahmer contributed with eight of her own while Alyssa Ballenger finished with six. Megan Gebhardt steadied the way for the Wildcats with 31 assists and eight digs, while Haley Kauth (14) and Morgan Alexander (11) both finished with double-digit digs. Tarrin Beller slowed the Eagles offense, recording six blocks.
The Wildcats head south next week to take part in the Southeastern Oklahoma Tournament, with a double-header starting on Friday, August 31.
