MSU Moorhead's Megan Hintz recorded a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds to lead the NSIC leading Dragons past Wayne State College 71-57 Friday evening in a Northern Sun Conference women's basketball game played at Nemzek Fieldhouse in Moorhead, Minnesota. MSUM is now 15-2 and 11-0 in the NSIC while WSC falls to 11-6 and 6-5 in league games.
The first half featured a trio of scoring runs with MSU Moorhead using the final run to take control of the game.
WSC opened with a 7-2 lead 1:46 into the contest. The host Dragons went on an 11-0 run to take a 13-7 lead at the 5:58 mark of the first quarter.
The Wildcats closed the quarter with an 11-2 run and took an 18-15 lead on a
Brittany Bongartz 3-pointer to end the quarter.
MSU Moorhead opened the second quarter with six straight points to regain the lead at 21-18.
WSC came back and tied the score at 26-26 on an
Erin Norling three-point play with 5:14 to play in the half.
But the Dragons closed the half scoring 10 of the next 12 points for a 36-28 lead at intermission.
MSU Moorhead put the game out of reach early in the third quarter, taking a 50-34 lead.
The 'Cats got as close as nine at the end of the third quarter at 52-43, but MSU Moorhead used a 15-2 run to open the fourth quarter for a commanding 67-45 lead and finished with the 71-57 victory.
Norling was the lone Wildcat in double figures with 20 points, her second 20-point scoring game of the season.
Andrea Larson added nine points with Bongartz finishing with eight.
WSC shot just 33 percent from the field making 21 of 62 shots, including 4 of 16 behind the arc. The 'Cats were 11 for 14 at the charity stripe.
Megan Hintz paced MSU Moorhead with her 21-point, 12 rebound effort. Jacky Volkert also hit double figures with 16 followed by Madi Green with 13.
MSU Moorhead made 27 of 64 shots for 42.2 percent. The Dragons were only 3 of 19 from 3-point range and 14 of 17 at the foul line.
The Dragons held a 44-37 edge in rebounding over WSC. Bongartz grabbed nine boards for WSC with
Kylie Hammer adding six.
Both teams had 12 turnovers, but MSU Moorhead held a 17-3 edge in points off turnovers. Hammer had four assists for WSC while
Amelia Ivester had two blocked shots.
The Wildcats play again Saturday, visiting Northern State in a 4 p.m. contest in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
