Game Recap: Baseball |

Strong pitching leads Wildcats in NSIC sweep over Bemidji State

Game 1 - Wayne State 5 Bemidji State 2

Game 2 - Wayne State 6 Bemidji State 0

Freshman starter Ryan Obrecht fired six shutout innings in the opener with freshman starter Cade Herrmann added five shutout innings in the second game to lead Wayne State College in a 5-2 and 6-0 Northern Sun Conference baseball sweep over Bemidji State Friday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne.  WSC is now 11-7 and 2-3 in league play while BSU drops to 1-15 and 0-5 in NSIC contests.
The opener saw Obrecht fire 6 2/3 innings of scoreless ball to carry the Wildcats in the 5-2 win.
Offensively, WSC scored one run in the first as Alex Logelin reached on a Beaver fielding error and later scored on a Bryce Bisenius sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.
The 'Cats took a 3-0 lead in the third as Logelin singled to left field and scored on a Bisenius two-run homer over the right field wall.
WSC took a 5-0 lead in the sixth on Andrew Hanson's RBI double down the left field line scoring Travis Miller (single) with Hanson crossing home plate on a Garrett Graveline groundout.
BSU avoided the shutout in the seventh scoring two runs on three hits off Obrecht.  Senior Charles Hasty was called on to notch the final out with the bases loaded, earning the save getting a fly out to left field to end the game as the Wildcats won the opener 5-2.
WSC had seven hits in the win, led by Hanson and Miller each going 2 for 3 with Hanson recording a double.  Bisenius had a two-run homer and finished with three RBI while Logelin and Kyle Thompson also had hits for the 'Cats.
Obrecht improved to 2-0 on the year with the win, working 6 2/3 innings.  He gave up five hits and two runs with six strikeouts and one walk.  Senior reliever Charles Hasty got the final out for his second save of the year.
The second game saw five different Wildcat pitchers combine on a six-hit shutout as WSC completed the sweep with a 6-0 victory.
WSC scored in the first inning as Logelin walked and scored on a BSU fielding error.
The Wildcats increased the lead to 4-0 in the second inning, highlighted by a two-run homer from Logelin along with an RBI double by Brendan Madsen.
WSC took a 5-0 lead in the fourth inning thanks to an RBI single by Bryce Bisenius that scored Jake Lorenzini (walk).  The 'Cats added their final run in the eighth as Lorenzini doubled and scored on a double play.
Wayne State ended with nine hits in the win, led by Madsen going 2 for 4 with a double, RBI and run scored.  Miller finished 2 for 4 with a pair of singles while Logelin hit a two-run homer.  Jake Lemar and Lorenzini each doubled with Lorenzini scoring three of Wayne State's six runs.
Freshman starter Cade Herrmann earned the win, working five innings and allowing just two hits with four strikeouts and two walks.  Four relievers each worked one inning to preserve the shutout – Grant Carl, Mitch Gullikson, Aaron Ras and Josh Renken – with each reliever allowing one hit, but the Wildcat defense turned three double plays to help the Wildcat pitching staff preserve the shutout.
The Wildcats are scheduled to host Minnesota Duluth in a three-game NSIC series this weekend.  Saturday's action has been moved up to 10 a.m. in hopes of getting in at least one game before predicted rain hits the Wayne area.
