Malone 9 Wayne State 1 (5 inn.)
Malone University scored three runs in the fourth and fifth innings to pull away for a 9-1 victory over Wayne State College Monday afternoon at the National Training Center Spring Games Softball Tournament in Clermont, Florida. WSC fell to 3-6 overall and 2-1 on the Florida trip while the Pioneers improved to 2-1 on the year.
Malone opened the scoring with one run in the first and two more in the third for a 3-0 lead.
The Pioneers took a 6-0 lead in the fourth scoring three more runs.
Wayne State got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning when
Annie Grammer walked and scsored on a
Kim Vidlak double to center field, making the score 6-1.
Malone produced four hits and scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the contest on the run rule with a 9-1 victory.
Wayne State was limited to just three hits in the contest - Vidlak's double along with singles from
Emily Chandler and
Kortney Buresh.
Freshman
Makenna Adkison (3-3) suffered the pitching loss, charged with three hits and three runs in three innings of work. Senior
Riley Vanderveen worked the final 1 2/3 innings of relief and allowed six runs.
Wayne State will play again on Monday afternoon at 4 p.m. vs. Walsh (Ohio) at the National Training Center Spring Games in Florida.
