Senior outfielder
Morgan Vasa went 3 for 4 with two runs scored to lead the Wayne State College softball team to a 9-5 win over Alderson Broaddus Thursday afternoon to conclude play at the National Training Center Spring Games in Clermont, Florida. The Wildcats closed their Florida Trip winning seven of eight games, improving to 8-6 overall, with Alderson Broaddus slipping to 1-7.
Both teams scored two runs in the first inning. The lone hit in the inning was a leadoff single from Vasa as the 'Cats took advantage of four walks to help score two runs.
A five-run third inning by the Wildcats gave Wayne State a 7-2 advantage.
Kortney Buresh accounted for a two-run single with Vasa adding a run-scoring single to highlight the inning.
The 'Cats added two more runs in the fifth for a 9-2 lead.
Abbie Hix and
Emily Chandler had singles for WSC in the inning.
Alderson Broaddus closed out the scoring with one run in the sixth and two in the bottom of the seventh for the 9-5 final score.
Wayne State had 12 hits in the contest, paced by Vasa's 3 for 4 effort and two runs scored from the leadoff position. Buresh finished 2 for 4 with two RBI while
Taylor Menard went 2 for 4 with an RBI and run scored.
Baylee Rial added a double while
Ashley Hernandez, Hix, Chandler and
Annie Grammer each singled.
Freshman
Makenna Adkison (5-3) worked six innings to earn the pitching win, charged with six hits and four runs with seven strikeouts and four walks. Senior
Riley Vanderveen pitched the final inning and allowed one hit and one run.
Wayne State is scheduled to resume play on Friday, March 22
nd at the Missouri Western Tournament in St. Joseph, Missouri battling the University of Mary and Northwest Missouri State.
