Wayne State 11 Clarion (Pa.) 3
Wayne State College took advantage of 14 walks and five fielding errors from Clarion (Pa.) to defeat the Golden Eagles 11-3 Thursday morning at the National Training Center Spring Games Softball Tournament played in Clermont, Florida. WSC is now 7-6 on the season with Clarion falling to 0-13.
Clarion struck first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning to grab a 2-0 lead.
The Wildcats tied the score at 2-2 with a pair of runs in the second inning.
Taylor Menard and
Morgan Vasa each had run-scoring singles for WSC.
The Golden Eagles regained the lead shortly with a run in the third inning for a 3-2 lead.
Wayne State came back with two runs in the top of the fourth to take the lead for good at 4-3. The lone hit in the inning was a single by
Ashley Hernandez as the 'Cats used four walks and a pair of wild pitches to help score two runs.
WSC added four runs in the top of the fifth for a 8-3 lead, using just one hit and three Clarion errors.
Emily Chandler had a single in the inning.
The Wildcats capped the win with a three-run seventh inning, highlighted by a two-run homer from
Abbie Hix, to conclude the 11-3 win.
Wayne State had six hits in the win, led by Vasa going 2 for 4 with two runs scored. Hix had the lone extra base hit for the 'Cats, a home run, while Hernandez, Menard and Chandler each singled with Menard scoring a team-high three runs.
Sophomore
Maddie Moser (3-3) earned the pitching win, working four innings and allowing three runs on seven hits. Senior
Riley Vanderveen pitched the final three innings of scoreless relief to earn the save, giving up just one hit with two strikeouts and three walks.
Wayne State will conclude their Florida Spring Break Trip Thursday afternoon with a game against Alderson Broaddus of West Virginia.
