Henderson State 3 Wayne State 2
The Wayne State College softball team dropped a 3-2 contest to Henderson State of Arkansas Saturday morning in the 2020 season opener played at the Arkansas Monticello Tournament in Bentonville, Arkansas. Henderson State is now 4-5 on the season while WSC is 0-1.
The Wildcats scored one run in the opening inning as sophomore
Kortney Buresh singled to left field to open the frame and later scored on a
Kamryn Sparks single to center field.
Henderson State responded with single runs in the bottom of the first and third innings and took a 2-1 lead.
Wayne State tied the score in the top of the fifth when Buresh singled with two outs and scored on a
Kim Vidlak double to right field to even the score at 2-2.
However the Reddies produced the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth inning and closed with a 3-2 win.
Wayne State out-hit Henderson State in the contest 7-5.
Buresh ended 3 for 4 with a trio of singles and scored both Wildcat runs while Vidlak was 2 for 3 with a double and single.
Ashley Hernandez added a double while Sparks singled to close out the Wildcat hitting attack.
Freshman starting pitcher
Sloan Cooksey fired a complete game in the loss, allowing just five hits and three runs with six strikeouts and three walks.
Wayne State was slated to play Southwest Baptist at 2 p.m. in the second game of the day at the Arkansas Monticello Tournament.
