Harding (Ark.) 5 Wayne State 1
Harding University of Arkansas used a walk-off grand slam homer with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to hand Wayne State College a heartbreaking 5-1 loss Sunday evening in the Wildcats' final game at the Arkansas Monticello Tournament in Bentonville, Arkansas. The Lady Bisons are now 7-5 while WSC falls to 1-3.
Wayne State scored the first run of the game in the top of the first as
Kortney Buresh singled to shortstop and scored on an RBI single to right field from
Ashley Hernandez.
The Wildcats looked to score more runs in the fifth inning as Buresh,
Kim Vidlak and
Kamryn Sparks singled to load the bases with no outs. But WSC could not get another hit and left the bases loaded.
The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the seventh inning when Harding recorded four hits with the big one coming on a grand slam to end the game as the Lady Bisons scored five runs in the seventh to hand the Wildcats a heartbreaking defeat.
Both teams had eight hits in the contest. Vidlak went 3 for 4 with three singles while Buresh was 2 for 4 with a pair of singles and one run scored.
Michaela Smith doubled while Hernandez and Sparks each singled.
Freshman starter
Hadley Chvatal (1-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings of work with six strikeouts and three walks.
Wayne State will play a doubleheader Monday at Southwest Baptist in Bolivar, Missouri starting at 11 a.m.
