Washburn 3 Wayne State 1
Washburn built an early 3-0 lead and limited Wayne State to just five hits as the Ichabods blanked the Wildcats 3-0 Sunday afternoon at the 5-State Softball Classic in Topeka, Kansas. It's the second win this season for Washburn over WSC as the Ichabods improved to 8-10 while WSC dropped to 5-4.
The Ichabods scored twice in the top of the first and one more in the top of the third for a 3-0 lead.
Wayne State got on the board in the bottom of the third as
Kortney Buresh singled and crossed home plate on a
Clare Reinhart single to make the score 3-1.
The Wildcats could manage just one hit the rest of the game as Washburn closed with the 3-1 win.
Washburn had eight hits in the game to five for the Wildcats. Reinhart led WSC in hitting going 2 for 3 with a pair of singles and RBI. Buresh singled and scored Wayne State's lone run while
Ashley Hernandez and
Paiton Tornberg each singled.
Junior starter
Maddie Moser (2-1) was tagged with the pitching loss, allowing three runs on six hits in 2 1/3 innings. Freshman reliever
Hadley Chvatal worked the final 4 2/3 innings and did not allow a run on two hits with one strikeout.
Wayne State was scheduled to play two more games Monday at the 5-State Classic but games were cancelled due to rain. The Wildcats are scheduled to play in the Drury Tournament at Springfield, Missouri Friday-Sunday, February 28, 29 and March 1.
