Northwest Missouri State 11 Wayne State 10 (8 inn.)
Wayne State College suffered an 11-10 extra inning loss to Northwest Missouri State after a two-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the eighth by the Bearcats Saturday morning at the Drury Invitational in Springfield, Missouri. WSC falls to 5-7 while NMSU is now 4-11.
The Wildcats scored two runs in the top of the first after
Clare Reinhart was hit by pitch and
Ashley Hernandez hit two-run homer to left field.
In the top of the third, WSC started a two-out rally with a single from Kim Vidalk. Vidalk advanced to second on a wild pitch and stole third. Reinhart and Hernandez hit back-to-back singles with Reinhart earning and RBI. The 'Cats added one more run after an error taking a 4-0 lead.
Northwest Missouri State shorted the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the third after scoring three runs and collecting four hits.
Paiton Tornberg and
Molli Vasa started the fourth inning with singles.
Kortney Buresh scored Tornberg and Hale after a base hit to right field putting the "Cats up 6-3.
NMSU followed in the bottom of the fourth collecting two hits and scoring two runs.
Hernandez led off the fifth inning with a single.
Kamryn Sparks reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to second on a wild pitch and reached third after
Michaela Smith singled. A two run double to center field by Vasa scored Smith and Sparks. Hale singled to right field picking up an RBI making the score 9-5.
Northwest Missouri State hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth and trailed by one run (9-8).
In the top of the sixth, Reinhart and Hernandez hit back-to-back singles but the Wildcats left one on base after Hernandez was caught stealing second.
The Bearcats collected two hits and scored one run after two WSC errors in the bottom sixth inning evening the score 9-9.
The score remained tied sending the game to extra innings.
In the top of the eighth inning a sacrifice bunt by Hale advanced Vasa to third. Buresh hit a RBI single to score Vasa to take a 10-9 lead.
Northwest Missouri took the win over Wayne State after a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth.
Wayne State out hit Northwest Missouri 14-13. Hernandez went 4 for 5 with a two-run homer. Buresh was 2 for 5 with three RBI and Reinhart collected two hits, one RBI and two runs scored. Vasa had two hits, two RBI and three runs scored. Hale had a hit and an RBI. Smith, Tornberg and Vidlak each added a hit and run scored.
Maddie Moser earned the pitching loss for Wayne State after giving up four hits, two walks, one earned run and one strikeout in three innings of relief pitched.
Sloan Cooksey was charged with nine hits, four walks, eight runs and four strikeouts after starting the first four innings.
Wayne State will play another game Saturday afternoon against William Jewell College at the Drury Invitational.
