Wayne State College was limited to just five hits, striking out 15 times against three different Tiffin University pitchers, as the Wildcats lost their opener 5-1 to Tiffin (Ohio) Sunday morning at the RussMatt Invitational baseball tournament in Auburndale, Florida. The Dragons move to 9-2 on the season with the win while WSC falls to 6-5.
Tiffin opened the scoring with one run in the first and two more in the second for an early 3-0 lead.
Wayne State scored what would be its lone run of the contest in bottom of the third inning when
Peyton Barnes doubled to left field and scored on a Tiffin error to make the score 3-1.
The Wildcats managed just three more hits the rest of the game. Three Tiffin pitchers held the WSC bats in check while recording 15 strikeouts and the Dragons added single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to close out the scoring for a 5-1 win.
Brendan Madsen was 2 for 4 at the plate for Wayne State while also recording a stolen base. Barnes doubled while
Alex Logelin and
Bryce Bisenius each singled.
Senior starter
Aidan Breedlove (0-1) was tagged with the pitching loss despite a solid outing. The Omaha Westside graduate allowed just three runs on five hits over six innings with three strikeouts and two walks. Reliever
Ryan Petersen worked 1 2/3 innings and was charged with one run on three hits with three strikeouts while
Josh Renken worked the final 1 1/3 innings and gave up two hits and one run.
Wayne State was scheduled to face Grand Valley State at 11:45 a.m. Sunday in another game at the RussMatt Invitational in Auburndale, Florida.
