Bisenius delivers game-winning hit in 2-1 11 inning win over Grand Valley State

Wayne State 2 Grand Valley State 1 (11 inn.)

Senior first baseman Bryce Bisenius delivered a single up the middle to score Peyton Barnes with one out in the bottom of the 11th inning to give Wayne State College a 2-1 victory over Grand Valley State Sunday afternoon in non-conference baseball played at the RussMatt Invitational in Auburndale, Florida.  WSC is now 7-5 with the win while the Lakers drop to 10-4.
The contest was a pitcher's duel between starters Hunter Wienhoff of Wayne State and Mark Scannell of Grand Valley State.  Wienhoff worked eight strong innings, allowing just one run on six hits with six strikeouts and two walks, while Scannell fired seven innings also allowing just one run on seven hits with four strikeouts and three walks.
Grand Valley State scored their first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning when Joe Laudont was hit by a pitch with one out and scored on a double by Ryan Blake-Jones for a 1-0 Laker lead.
The score remained 1-0 until the sixth inning when the Wildcats evened the score as junior designated hitter Noah Roberts singled up the middle and later scored on a Travis Baily singled to left field to make the score 1-1.
The Wildcats had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the ninth inning with a runner on third base and just one out, but could not score.
Roberts singled through the right side with one out and pinch runner Mitch Gullikson then advanced to third base on a wild pitch.  But CJ Neumann grounded out to third and Baily struck out to end the scoring threat sending the game into extra innings.
In the bottom of the 10th, the Wildcats loaded the bases without a hit but could not come up with the big play to score the winning run.  With two outs and no runners on, Chris Cornish and CJ Neumann each walked while Baily was hit by a pitch.  Butt Grand Valley State escaped again as Conner Fiene grounded out to second base to end the inning.
The third time was the charm for the Wildcats in the 11th inning as WSC did not squander another scoring opportunity and ended the game.  Barnes led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a bunt single from Colin Chick
Following a sacrifice bunt from Alex Logelin that advanced Barnes and Chick to third and second, Andrew Hanson was walked to load the bases when Bisenius laced a single up the middle to score with Barnes with the game-winner.
Wayne State held an 11-6 advantage in hits over Grand Valley State in the contest.  Roberts finished 3 for 4 with a double and run scored.  Logelin was the only other Wildcat with multiple hits in the game, going 2 for 4 with a pair of singles.
Reliever Trenton Frerichs (1-0) recorded the pitching win for the Wildcats, working the final inning without allowing a hit and notching one strikeout.  Wienhoff worked the first eight innings with sophomore lefthander Andrew Staebell pitching the next two innings retiring all six batters with two strikeouts.
The Wildcats play again Monday afternoon at the RussMatt Invitational in Florida, facing Northwood (Mich.) in a nine-inning game starting at 3:45 p.m.
