Augustana 60 Wayne State 57
Augustana outscored Wayne State 43-31 in the second half, rallying from an 11-point deficit with 16 minutes to play, to edge the Wildcats 60-57 Saturday afternoon in an NSIC South Division men's basketball contest played at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls. WSC drops to 9-6 and 9-4 in the division while Augustana improves to 9-5 and 7-5 in the NSIC South Division.
The Wildcats got off to a slow start, making just 1 of their first 11 shots, and trailed 12-4 midway through the first half.
WSC then held Augustana without a point for the next 7:54 and went on a 16-0 run to take a 20-12 lead.
The Wildcats closed the first half with a
Jay Saunders layup and took a 26-17 lead at intermission.
Wayne State built on the halftime lead early in the second half and took their biggest lead of the game at 33-22 following a
Ben Dentlinger basket with 17:07 to play.
WSC held onto the lead until a key scoring run by Augustana midway through the second half gave the Vikings control of the game.
A
Jordan Janssen basket with 10:32 to play gave WSC a 45-38 lead, but the Vikings scored the next 11 points in just under three minutes time and took their first lead since early in the game at 49-45.
The 'Cats responded with the next eight points to regain the lead and was in front 53-49 following a
Nate Mohr 3-pointer with 3:45 to play.
After Augustana came back to take a 56-53 lead, WSC knotted the score at 56-56 on a
Alec Millender 3-pointer with 90 seconds to play.
The Vikings took the lead back for good on a pair of free throws at 58-56 with 1:08 to play.
Janssen was fouled and made 1 of 2 free throws to make the score 58-57.
Following an Augustana missed shot, WSC had the chance to take the lead but Millender was called for an offensive foul and the Vikings made a pair of free throws with seven seconds left for the final score 60-57.
Millender led WSC in scoring with 19 points while Janssen had 13 points and 12 rebounds for his ninth double-double of the season.
WSC finished the game making 21 of 50 shots for 42 percent, going 7 of 15 behind the arc and 8 for 12 at the foul line.
Adam Dykman had 14 points for Augustana followed by Dylan LeBrun and Tyler Riemersma with 12 each.
Augustana shot 19 of 50 for 38 percent and made 6 of 17 3-pointers to go with 16-18 free throws.
WSC held a 33-29 edge in rebounding thanks to Janssen's 12 boards. He also had six assists and three blocked shots for the Wildcats while
Ben Dentlinger was credited with four blocks.
WSC faces Augustana again on Sunday at 12 p.m. in the Sanford Pentagon.
