th in this week's Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II Top 30 Coaches Poll, used dominant pitching in shutting down Wayne State College Saturday afternoon 7-1 and 10-2 in Northern Sun Conference baseball played at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne. MSU improves to 24-4 and 20-3 in the NSIC while WSC slips to 10-18 and 9-15 in league games.
The first game saw MSU starter Jon Ludwig limit the Wildcats to just three hits in a 7-1 win.
The Mavericks scored one run in the first, four in the fourth and two more in the fifth while WSC avoided the shutout by scoring in the sixth inning when
Conner Fiene led off with a single and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Brenden Madsen.
Alex Logelin went 2 for 3 with a double to lead WSC at the plate while Fiene singled.
Starter
Aidan Breedlove (2-3) was tagged with the pitching loss, working four innings. Reliever
Keean Allen pitched three innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one hit with one strikeout.
The second game saw the visiting Mavericks pull away late with six runs in the final two innings for a 10-2 win over the Wildcats.
Minnesota State scored one run in the first inning followed by three in the fourth for a 4-0 advantage.
WSC got on the board in the fourth as
Andrew Hanson singled and scored when
Eric Standish singled.
The Mavericks put the game out of reach with two runs in the eighth and four more in the ninth for a 10-1 lead.
Hanson connected for a solo homer in the ninth to make the final score 10-2.
Hanson went 2 for 4 with a homer and two runs scored to lead the 'Cats at the plate. Standish finished 2 for 4 with a pair of singles and RBI while
CJ Neumann was 2 for 3 with two singles.
Senior starter
Hunter Wienhoff (1-3) was the losing pitcher, working 7 2/3 innings with eight strikeouts. Reliever
Andrew Staebell pitched the remaining 1 1/3 innings.
Wayne State and Minnesota State close their three-game NSIC series Sunday with a nine-inning game starting at noon at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex.
